Chatlog below the cut!

[13:59] Click la Click
[14:00] (I can’t believe it took me this long to think of that)
[14:00] Whoa, a combo mecha
01[14:00] I see they were saving up some animation budget for this ep.
[14:00] It’s supposed to look phallic, right? That has to be intentional
[14:01] Whoa
[14:01] Well, Mako referred to the “big rubber barrier,” so yeah.
[14:01] Ad.
[14:02] Wait, Ragyo can just yank the stars from the uniforms just like that?
[14:02] When I listen to it, it sounds like they were able to do a pun in Japanese on submission and clothing
[14:02] With her ridiculous new super clothes, yes, yes she can.
[14:02] So, this is the final handicap fight
[14:03] (it’s weird, usually the final miniboss is the “gimmick” fight, and the final battle is an all-out brawl)
[14:03] Crunchyroll is not being kind to FoME today
[14:03] Finally back.
[14:04] Because of course it’s named “Shinra” something
[14:04] And then Ragyo brags of her corporate success.
[14:04] A ball of yarn… I love it
[14:04] And now they get OHKO’d
[14:05] Eeyup, called it
[14:05] Interrupting their cut scene? That’s just rude.
[14:05] Worse, she interrupted their attack callouts
[14:05] Also, tide of LCL.
01[14:05] LCL!
[14:06] So, are the Elite Four gonna be OHKO’d first, or are they more crucial?
[14:06] Whoa, Mako underwent asexual duplication
[14:06] Whoa
[14:06] Yep, Nui’s officially lost it
[14:07] Ryuko Matoi: Legendary Artifact Creature
[14:07] Bikini fight, of course
[14:07] And here’s his Disney Death
[14:07] Hououmaru is that assistant, right?
[14:08] Yeah, the one with the sunglasses.
[14:08] Hououmaru Rei, yes
[14:08] Ad.
[14:08] Shorter one.
[14:08] Another ad, now? What time are you paused at?
[14:08] I’m back.
[14:08] 6:15
[14:09] Whoa
[14:09] She got a new one
[14:09] Eww
[14:09] I mean, it’s not gonna work, but that’s still awesome
[14:09] Oh, it allowed their friends to break free
[14:10] Why did they need a panty shot on this series?
[14:10] Headbutt!
[14:10] Whoa, Ragyo’s teeth go sharp
[14:10] Heh. Scissor sisters.
[14:11] Nonon saves the day!
01[14:11] Whoah, that’s a lot of Nuis.
[14:11] Ooh, now THAT was an insult, coming from him
[14:11] “You’re not worth collecting data on?” That’s the worst thing he can say to someone
[14:11] Hahah, Nonon calls him out on his Disney Death
[14:12] Eww
[14:12] Totem Pole attack
[14:12] And then Gamagoori tore through the AT Frield and became a Ganmen.
[14:12] Ah, he really does attack with his scary face
01[14:12] That is 100% what just happened.
[14:12] And it’s ejaculated
01[14:12] Yeah, that was intentional.
[14:12] So, does Ragyo’s healing power drain her HP?
[14:13] Uh oh
[14:13] Whoa
01[14:13] “Gir, self-destruct, now!” “FINALLY! EeeheheheheheheBOOM”
[14:13] Ad.
[14:13] It’s Safer-Nui
[14:13] Last one.
[14:14] I’m back.
[14:14] I’m at exactly 11:00
[14:15] Ragyo has issues, as has been established
[14:15] We have liftoff!
[14:16] Ah, so now are all the Earthlings going to wind up fighting it off at once?
[14:16] Uh… Mako?
[14:16] Giving her a reason to come back.
[14:16] What the…
[14:17] Oooooooookay, that happened
[14:17] By their powers combined, she is Captain Fashion.
01[14:17] That’s basically my reaction every time Mako’s on screen.
01[14:17] …they’re doing a combining mech thing NOW?
[14:17] Ooh, Phoenix form!
[14:18] Aww, Satsuki should be up there with her
[14:18] Well duh
[14:19] She’s gonna need to channel her energy and the love from her friends into her final attack
[14:19] They misspelled “principle,” of course
01[14:19] She’s gone super-saiyan, maybe a soul bomb?
[14:20] Well, she’s kind of wearing everyone’s fightnig spirit…
[14:20] “So what now, Jack Sparrow? Are we to be two immortals battling each other until judgment day?”
[14:21] This is basically Vegeta’s plan to beat Freiza
[14:21] “Tough love,” of course that’s how she absorbs it
[14:21] “I get stronger when I almost die, so beat the shit out of me”
[14:21] You said that already
01[14:22] Oh yeah, I forgot they absorb life fibers after battles.
[14:22] Oh, they’re BOTH as well as neither
[14:22] Giant red text battle!
[14:22] Ahah, of course the dramatic statements are being printed
01[14:23] And then seven billion people fell out of the sky, burned on re-entry, and went splat.
[14:23] Well, presumably the Life Fibers had just enough energy left to help them survive the fall
[14:23] Whoa… going into Once Upon a Time territory now, only grosser
[14:23] That is not a healthy looking heart.
[14:23] Well, it’s Ragyo’s heart, of course it’s not healthy
[14:24] Now that’s a good reply
[14:24] Aww, his heroic sacrifice
[14:24] I bet if Ragyo had taken Matoi’s offer instead of doing that, Satsuki would have been displeased
[14:24] Isn’t “wrapping things up” what clothes are supposed to do?
01[14:24] *rimshot*
[14:25] Anime physics
[14:25] AHAHAH
[14:25] Anime physics to the max
[14:25] This is like, the logical extension of anime physics
[14:26] Okay, how is the closing different?
[14:26] Do we see their date?
[14:26] We’re about to, yes.
[14:27] (that doesn’t count as a spoiler if it’s about 15 seconds ahead of time)
[14:27] D’awwwww
[14:27] (Didn’t think it would.)
01[14:27] But… Gamagoori?
[14:27] Satsuki cut her hair?
01[14:27] WTF HAS SATSUKI BECOME
[14:27] That doesn’t seem right
[14:27] Blink and you’ll miss him, Froborr.
[14:28] I love this song, BTW
[14:28] Wow
01[14:28] No, I saw him dressed like Saved by the Bell extras with the other Elite Four
[14:28] So that was Kill la Kill
01[14:28] I was referring to the fact that he and Mako were kind of developing into a thing..?
[14:28] A lot of people like it, but you can’t deny that some seriously bad decisions went into this show
[14:28] I was expecting that too
01[14:28] So that was Kill la Kill. It was… okay?
[14:29] So, was it worth it?
01[14:29] The liveblogs were interesting enough to make it worth it.
[14:29] (I also ship Satsuki and Nonon, because they’re both awesome)
[14:29] You see people on the internet say that this is a friendship date, but naw
01[14:29] Even if I’d given it a second chance without the liveblog, I doubt I would have watched past That Scene.
03[14:30] * Sylocat changes topic to ‘Welcome to Rabbit Cube! During the MLP hiatus, we stream anime instead. Next series TBA! ‘
01[14:30] I mean, the series DID just end with the entire cast in a naked cuddle pile.
[14:30] They made Mako/Gamagoori the most popular het ship in the show and then sank it for Mako/Ryuko
01[14:30] So it’s entirely possible everyone/everyone to be a ship.
[14:30] Yeah, I get the feeling a number of characters are gonna be non-monogamous
[14:30] Though their date is pretty Platonic
01[14:31] Yeah, but they’re anime characters.
01[14:31] They *might* hold hands after six months of marraige.
[14:31] Heh. Point.
[14:31] Structurally, Mako has been The Protagonist’s Girlfriend for a while
[14:32] I did like that there was no hetero love interest for either Ryuko or Satsuki
[14:32] One of the common resolutions of the “overwhelmed by the dangerous power they wield” crisis is being brought back to their senses by the love interest
[14:32] As Mako did. Twice.
[14:33] Some people read Senketsu as a “sword boyfriend” (another example is the Transistor from the game of that title)
[14:33] And Satsuki did once
[14:33] (and while Ryuko and Satsuki are sisters, they didn’t grow up together… just pointing that out)
01[14:34] This show has enough icky incestual stuff going on as it is, Sylocat.
[14:34] Oh, believe me, I know
01[14:35] Netflix is now recommending I watch Gurren Lagann, which is just serving to remind me how much more I enjoyed it than this.
[14:36] IIRC, a number of the same people worked on that and this?
[14:36] They did, hence the numerous references to several Gainax shows.
01[14:37] Yes, Studio Trigger is basically made up of the people who made Gurren Lagann.
[14:38] I think that’s fair, but I also think Kill la Kill is important because it allowed shouty and angry women to totally run the show, while Gurren Lagann’s two principle woman exist to a.) be moe and motivate Simon b.) kiss a couple of dudes just before they die
01[14:39] Excellent point.
[14:39] A lot of people love this show, a lot of people hate this show, and there are reasons for that.
[14:40] It isn’t a show that’s easy to feel neutral towards.
01[14:40] I kind of do though?
[14:40] I manage that just fine
01[14:40] Basically because there are bits of it that are great and bits that are horrible and mostly it just feels like somebody autotuned Gurren Lagann.
[14:43] I feel like Gurren Lagann involved at least one of the principles expressing some of their intense life experiences though stuff they really like, while KlK was the same person or people just indulging in those same things that they really like
[14:45] I caught a whole bunch of weird symbolism and metaphor at various points of KLK, though I’m not sure it’s worth going over it with a magnifying glass to unpack it
[14:45] (at least one analyst claimed it was a metaphor for State Shinto or something, IIRC)
01[14:45] That’d be Charles Dunbar and Kit Paige.
01[14:45] They have a book coming out.
[14:46] Satsuki’s speech to the sewing club president about how school uniforms are based on military uniforms definitely suggests that reading
01[14:47] IIRC I think they argue that Satsuki is Amaterasu, Ryuko is an oni, and Ragyo is Ho-oh?
[14:49] Hm, I’m not sure I buy a reading in which there’s that much of an asymmetry between Ryuko and Ragyo
[14:49] Sorry, Ryuko and Satsuki
[14:49] Like, you can very easily draw a Red Oni / Blue Oni read of them
[14:50] They have a Red/Blue color scheme and the differences between their personalities line up with the trope
01[14:50] Wait… but Ryuko’s got the Red personality and the blue clothes, while Satsuki has the Blue personality and white clothes..?
[14:51] The color of the wrist gadget Ryuko uses to transform is red
[14:51] All the trim on Ryuko’s clothes is red
[14:51] The armband that Satsuki uses to transform is blue
01[14:51] Ah, yes, I see.
[14:52] I’m not familiar with Ho-oh other than I think there’s a pokemon named that?
[14:52] Like apparently the legendary pokemon are basically dieties so I guess it’s not terribly surprising
01[14:53] Ho-oh is the Eastern phoenix, bascially, which is MUCH more powerful than its Western coutnerpart. Also called Hinotori and Otori, I believe.
01[14:53] Associated with rainbows, eternal life, cosmic power, enlightenment.
[14:54] Because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west?
01[14:54] Er, I meant Eastern as in “East Asian culture” as opposed to Western as in “West Asian and European culture”
[14:55] They do a lot of visual compare and contrast with Ragyo and Satsuki
[14:55] The close up shots of either of them making a step forward before speechifying, with a clear sound effect for the heel landing on a hard surface
[14:56] Ragyo’s rainbow presence and Satuki’s white light presence
[14:56] Reminds me of Gandalf’s line about Saruman starting to wear a robe that was not white, but woven of many colors
[14:57] I always thought that was an odd way to know that the Way of the Enemy was upon him
[14:58] I too found it odd that it was the villain who had the rainbow aesthetic… even outside of MLP, aren’t rainbows usually the good team’s thing?
[14:59] It’s actually kind of ironic, because one of the themes of the villains here was homogenity. And yet, there’s Ragyo, with her rainbow aura.

[14:00] Link’s voice actor voices Sanageyama, you know.
[14:00] Of course, the greatest disparity
[14:00] We came to exactly this conclusion last week
[14:00] I love the terminology they use for their dramatic statements
[14:01] Wait, who came up with the suction device?
[14:01] Was it Nonon?
[14:01] Iori
[14:01] Uh oh… Nui is even more unbalanced now
[14:01] It was his major project through the time skip
01[14:01] Well, Nui’s lost it.
[14:01] Ah yeah, I forgot
01[14:02] What little of it she had, anyway.
[14:02] I love how her expression never really changes
[14:02] Also, I believe they added a few outfits to Satsuki in the OP
01[14:03] Anyway, yeah, I’m aware liking TP more than Ocarina is a rare opinion, but *shrug* It is the opinion I have.
[14:03] e.g. I saw the nudist belts outfit just now and IIRC that doesn’t show up the first time this OP plays
[14:03] Ad after the credits, per usual.
[14:03] The outfits go by so quick it’s hard to tell
01[14:03] I’ll give an even rarer one: I like Windwaker more than OoT.
[14:03] I think there are a lot of people who undervalue refinement of the formula when it comes to evaluating Zelda games
[14:04] I found the sailing enjoyably meditative.
01[14:04] Hmm, maybe one of us should go back and check on the nudist belt thing and comment?
[14:04] That opinion isn’t quite as rare as you might think…
[14:04] Actually I suspect that Windwaker > OoT is a more common sentiment than TP > OoT
[14:04] I’m back.
01[14:04] (I did not like the sailing, but I LOVED the swordplay)
[14:04] I know I hear WW > TP a lot
[14:05] Wait, Satsuki didn’t know why Nui’s arms didn’t regenerate?
[14:05] tbh I like WW better than either OoT or TP and I can’t express a strong preference between Ocaraina and Twilight
01[14:05] So you have to use the scissors AS scissors to work
[14:05] Wait, what is… wow
[14:05] Which is why they were designed as scissors in the first place.
[14:06] Ooh, don’t go for the direct charge yet
01[14:06] Yes, not “how dare you mind control me into attacking my friends,” “how dare you make me wear that outfit”
[14:06] Well, same difference, on this show
[14:06] Aaaand Ragyo can fly now.
[14:06] Never attack during exposition, sheesh
01[14:07] Ragyo has achieved true detachment I see.
[14:07] Underboob, of course
[14:07] Yeah, go for the Life Fiber, it’s the source of her power anyway
[14:08] Ahh, that’s Mako’s gamer fuel
[14:08] Whoa
[14:08] Spawn egg attack
[14:08] The leviathan harpooned them.
[14:08] How did the thing get so close without them noticing?
[14:09] Wait, where have I seen that superweapon attack before? Opening a cone…
[14:09] Ad.
[14:09] Ah, the Bifrost
01[14:09] From?
[14:09] Thor
01[14:09] Oh!
01[14:09] Sorry, had my head stuck on anime.
[14:09] And I’m back.
[14:10] What the…
[14:10] Hey, use the bandages as armor!
01[14:10] *sigh* Mako’s family continue to think they’re funny.
[14:10] Like a mini-mecha
[14:10] “The Ryuko in my mind?”
[14:11] So, that was SUPPOSED to be kinda creepy, right?
[14:11] Yes, yes it was.
[14:11] Awwwwww, the Elite Four to the rescue
[14:11] Whoa, his collar has a mind of its own now
[14:11] “Persona unleashed.”
[14:12] Not a bad combined attack
[14:12] Satsuki really worked on her Social Links.
[14:12] “No need for such a flashy entrance?” How else are they supposed to beat the minibosses? Sheesh
[14:12] Ah, echoing Kyubey now?
[14:13] So, how much damage did it do?
[14:13] Whoa
[14:13] I think bisection counts as an instant death attack.
01[14:13] Um, that’s probably not a good thing.
[14:14] And on that note, ad.
[14:14] I mean, she survived that Life Fiber desync, so we know she’s effectively indestructable, but still… that can’t be comfortable
[14:14] And I’m back.
[14:15] Yeesh
[14:15] “A sham?”
[14:15] Ooh, Ragyo just made the big mistake
[14:15] Whoa, she got better fast
[14:16] All expressed through one hand signal.
[14:16] Ah… I thought there would have to be some dramatic moment of support when they put her back together
[14:16] Ahahah… she called her out on monologuing
[14:16] Ooh, Ragyo’s losing her cool as well
[14:17] Of course, wasting time on monloguing plays to Stasuki’s advantage when she does it
[14:17] Everything is a weapon for her
01[14:17] Aren’t they supposed to be destroying the transmitter?
[14:17] Wait, what? His eyes were fine all along?
[14:17] The giant alien that’s about to eat them is a bit more pressing.
[14:17] He had them sewn shut, not removed
[14:17] Right, I forgot
[14:17] Ooh, it’s going to transform?
[14:18] Ah, “gourd,” I was trying to think of what it looked like
[14:18] Ahahh… it’s powered by a hamster wheel, of course
[14:19] (I’ve taken to gauging the likely success of attacks by how dramatic the speeches are right before they make them)
[14:19] Wait, where’s the butler while all this is going on?
[14:19] Whoa, Mako’s hyperactivity comes in handy for once
01[14:19] Ah, Mako having her… crap I’m blanking on his name. The little pig creature in Gurren Lagann.
01[14:19] She’s having that moment.
[14:19] Ryuko can’t do it alone. She needs the support of her friends to pull it off.
[14:20] Buuta
[14:20] Ooh, the Blade Ship attack
[14:20] No, but it can be weakened
[14:20] “Humanity does not live for clothing,” is a big dramatc speech in this show
[14:21] Whoa, where did the ship land?
[14:21] Slammed into honnouji of course
[14:21] Of course
[14:21] “Shinra,” is one of its names, because of course it is
[14:22] Ooh, And now, all the club leaders unite to take down Nui and Ragyo
[14:23] “Apprehend?” Oh please
01[14:23] But first, tea.
[14:23] AHAHAHAH
[14:23] Of course, a tea break
[14:23] Naturally.
[14:24] The whole final boss fight and epilogue are only going to take one episode. That’s… refreshing
[14:24] Eww
[14:24] D’awww
[14:24] Stay tuned. There’s more.
[14:24] Ooh, something after the credits?
[14:25] After these completely out-of-place closing credits
[14:25] I’m pretty sure the song has been remixed
01[14:25] Wait what
[14:25] Does it sound different to anyone else?
[14:25] WHOA
[14:25] Your credits have been hijacked by Nui.
[14:25] Fourth wall attack!
01[14:25] So Nui is Santa Claus?
[14:26] “This woman is dangerous,” as if Ryuko wasn’t already aware of that
[14:26] Ah, so SHE’S the final miniboss. I was wondering what her purpose was
01[14:27] Okay, the next episode preview is the best Evangelion reference yet.

Chatlog below the cut!

01[14:00] When last we left, the most violent strip tease since Sucker Punch.
[14:00] Huh, I think that’s as close to hearing Junketsu’s voice as ever so far in this series
[14:00] Fast healing is hax.
[14:01] And Ryuko and Senketsu are apparently a combining mecha.
01[14:02] I was thinking “blathering blatherskite!” but I decided that’s a bit obscure these days.
[14:02] I think Mako fits the personality better.
01[14:03] Except that she has no detectable skills at all, while Fenton Crackshell has precisely one.
[14:03] Ad.
[14:03] Mako’s skill is protagonist wrangling.
[14:04] Did the ad start at the end of the credits?
[14:04] Yup. And now it’s done.
01[14:06] why do they keep saying “bat-crap” instead of batshit?
01[14:06] It’s REALLY distracting.
01[14:07] Were they trying to keep to a PG rating or something? Because that ship sailed LONG ago.
[14:07] Yeah that is weird
[14:07] Case in point.
01[14:08] Ah, she’s gone full Pinkamena I see.
01[14:10] And of course they’ll use the life fibers to make new suits for everyone to fight in the Grand Finale.
[14:11] I guess Nui doesn’t actually need blood.
[14:11] Ad.
01[14:11]   Both the sound effect and the movement of Nui’s eye were Eva references. Implication is that she’s a cross between Asuka and Eva-01.
[14:11] And I’m back.
[14:13] “How dare you not kill us!?”
01[14:14] STOP SAYING BAT-CRAP IT’S WEIRD
[14:15] So Satsuki looks kind of like the Spiral King, as we’ve discussed earlier, but there’s another character from that show she looks even more like: The kid who put the Spiral King’s head in a jar.
01[14:15] The one with the glasses?
[14:16] From the drawing lots bunker
[14:16] Rossiu.
01[14:16] Oh, Rossiu!
01[14:16] Hmm.
01[14:16] Yeah, I guess.
[14:16] Kill la Kill has been described as “Simon’s daughter vs. Rossiu’s daughter.”
01[14:16] Ah yes, a delicious meal of deep-fried assorted objects.
[14:17] And Soroi’s tea. Food and drink come together.
[14:18] Ad.
[14:18] I’m back.
01[14:20] So it really is just Lavos.
[14:20] Yup. A virus on a cosmic scale.
01[14:23] Summers blood flows in both their veins.
01[14:24] It’s a giant enemy crab, CLEARLY.
01[14:25] Oh you have got to be kidding me
[14:25] Hey, she clearly hit it for massive damage.
01[14:25] Calling back to the fight club?
[14:26] As I recall, she was the most dangerous of all the two-star club captains Ryuko encountered
01[14:26] That she was.
01[14:26] Makes sense she’d be the first two-star uniform off the assembly line, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she has uniforms for the Elite Four with her.
[14:27] No comment on the nature of the assembly line?
01[14:27] ?
[14:27] I think he’s asking about the sewing club president’s uniform
[14:27] That I am.
01[14:27] It was only onscreen for a couple seconds.
01[14:27] Didn’t really hacve time.
[14:27] Fair enough.
[14:28] You can say that about a lot of things in this show
01[14:29] So, what about it?
[14:30] Came as a surprise to me the first time I saw it. Broke the established pattern of club presidents getting two-star uniforms.
[14:31] By now it’s clear that sewing club president is on par with the elite four
[14:31] He was in on the coup plot
[14:31] True. Never mind.
[14:31] Lavos is actually a very strong connection. Lavos had queen Zeal, Life Fibers have Ragyo. Janus/Magus lines up roughly with Satsuki.
[14:32] Well… sorry about that, y’all
[14:32] It happens.
01[14:33] That’s a good point about Lavos.
01[14:33] Hey Sylocat.
[14:33] I remembered the ‘stream when I woke up this morning, I had it in my mind for the first several hours of my consciousness today, but the last time I looked at the clock was 11:30, and then I just had the vague sense that I had something planned for later today
01[14:34] Hey, it happens.
01[14:35] Just sorry you missed the episode that confirmed all the video game jokes forever.
[14:35] I’ll post a comment with my own commentary in the comments thread then
[14:35] So, Arrlaari, would that make Ryuko Schala?
[14:36] That’s not as good a fit as Satsuki and Magus
01[14:37] I actually think the dad is Schala.
[14:37] In fact she bears a stronger resemblance to Glenn than to Schala
[14:37] He’s also the three wise men
01[14:37] Unwilling assistant, lost in the rise to power of Zeal/Ragyo.
01[14:38] Makes sense, the three gurus and Schala kind of go together.
[14:38] Yeah, those comparisons works much better.
[14:38] And now I want to play Crimson Echoes again
01[14:39] What’s Crimson Echoes?
[14:39] It’s that Chrono Trigger fanquel ROM Hack
01[14:39] Ah.
01[14:39] Any good?
[14:39] Apparently he thinks it’s worth replaying
[14:40] Eh, I’m a sucker for that kind of thing
[14:40] This all reminds me of a lengthy essay I read about Chrono Trigger and existentialism. I forget whether Crono Cross and existentialism was the same essay or a different one.
[14:40] And if the latter, I forget if it was by the same person

Kill la Kill chatlog below the cut!

[14:00] What an image to start on
[14:01] Commentary™
[14:01] WHOA
01[14:02] Shit, Netflix is refusing to work for me.
[14:02] So, it’s gone from subtext to text
[14:02] Ah… should we push it back a bit?
01[14:02] Yeah, sorry, can we put a pin in it and restart at 2:05?
[14:02] Fine by me. Hulu froze up too.
[14:03] Okay… paused at 2:21, exactly at the title card
[14:03] (or we could start over)
[14:03] I am also paused at title card
[14:03] As am I. Got it working.
[14:04] Okay then…
[14:04] Froborr, is it working now?
[14:05] Click again…
[14:07] Ad.
[14:07] Is the ad right after the opening credits?
01[14:07] Sorry folks, still not working.
[14:07] Dang…
01[14:07] I’m going to switch to Crunchyroll, if y’all can just hang out at the ad after the opening credits?
[14:07] Try it on Crunchyroll instead?
[14:07] It is.
01[14:07] Sorry.
[14:08] Can do, Froborr.
[14:08] Alright… at least we know where to pause
[14:08] We resume at twelve past?
[14:08] (or eleven)
01[14:09] I’m thinking we resume when I hit the end of the ad after the opening credits…
01[14:09] Okay, cold open is now playing!
01[14:09] Ew.
[14:09] Like I said…
[14:09] Yeah.
01[14:09] Hmm, interesting that Nui can’t use Kamuis.
[14:10] Or Goku uniforms, or any other life-fiber clothing
[14:10] Ragyo needs to get taken down, stat
[14:10] And, as I said, WHOA
01[14:10] See, now Ryuko/Nui makeouts are acceptable.
[14:11] (hang on, gonna reset my connection)
01[14:11] Weird, but at least not frickin’ incest.
01[14:11] …wait, no, shit, they are incest, aren’t they?
[14:11] Well, not by a strict definition.
01[14:11] They’re half-sisters, fuck.
01[14:11] I mean no, don’t fuck, because it’s gross.
[14:11] Depends on whether Ragyo used her DNA or if Nui’s just pure alien fabric.
01[14:11] True.
03[14:11] * Sylocat (b83c1db1@gateway/web/freenode/ip.184.60.29.177) has joined ##rabbitcube
01[14:12] Except it seems pretty clear Ragyo raised Nui as her daughter regardless, so her DNA is kind of secondary.
[14:12] So there’s that.
[14:13] Indeed, a study into the question showed that sexual revulsion develops between adopted siblings, and is absent from siblings raised apart
01[14:13] Credits over, on to the ad.
[14:13] I forget the name attached to it
[14:13] On average, at least
01[14:13] I mean, that makes sense, because it’s not like we can sense other people’s DNA, but we DO know who we grow up with.
01[14:13] And however the incest revulsion works, it kind of has to be based on what we can sense, right?
01[14:14] Holy fuck I am getting the exact same ad THREE TIMES IN A ROW.
[14:14] Crunchyroll.
01[14:14] And it’s for fucking Crunchyroll itself.
01[14:14] Weaksauce.
01[14:14] Back!
[14:15] I do like pulling the pin with a sword.
[14:15] Satsuki steals her transformation sequence, but adds tentacles
[14:15] Ah, Mako relays the message for them to stay out of it
[14:17] Ah, I always wondered why dueling energy beams didn’t push one combatant into a wall
01[14:17] They’re building some kind of giant monster body for Ragyo aren’t they.
[14:18] Ragyo wearing a giant monster body? How would they tell?
[14:18] (sorry)
[14:18] I’m counting eight different screen-in-screens there.
[14:18] At least.
01[14:18] I think they may have hit 12.
[14:18] So, when Ryuko gets Senketsu back, what’s Satsuki going to fight in?
[14:19] Satsuki’s fighting like a Pokemon trainer.
[14:20] We’ve already seen Dark Ryuko, so what do you call this?
[14:21] Oh!
01[14:21] Hey, they are joining in!
[14:21] So the Elite Four do get involved after all!
[14:21] WHOA
01[14:21] The Elite Four coming to the rescue of the Pokemon trainer?
[14:21] Collar McDatapants is going all out for this fight
[14:21] Heh. I didn’t even mean to set that one up.
[14:22] D’aww, the power of friendship
01[14:22] Oh hey, I forgot about the clothing removal gun.
01[14:22] Also: yes, Satsuki actually uses tactics instead of insisting on going alone!
[14:22] Hahah…
[14:22] Oh, of course, Mako had to have the plan written on her hands
01[14:22] And that’s why she’s the shonen villain instead of the shonen hero.
01[14:22] (Satsuki, not Mako.(
[14:23] Of course, Nui butts in as well
01[14:23] Ad.
01[14:23] The SAME ad.
[14:23] Also ad.
[14:24] Let me guess, it’s gonna play three times?
01[14:24] Who knows?
01[14:24] Playing a second time.
[14:24] Eeyup
01[14:24] Seriously if they show this ad again, that’s it, I’m turning on adblock for Crunchyroll.
01[14:24] Yep, third time.
[14:24] A wise decision indeed
01[14:24] I’m turning on adblock for when we do Sailor Moon.
[14:25] My ad’s done.
01[14:25] I’ll turn it back off and give them a second chance next weekend.
[14:25] I mean, it’s not like Crunchy can pay itself for their own ads
01[14:25] Back
[14:25] Oh, don’t tell me Mako will be the stalemate breaker
01[14:25] Of course. Power of Friendship and such shit.
[14:25] What’s with the low-tech displays?
[14:26] Those have been there the whole series.
[14:26] And why do all their stockholders look identical?
[14:26] First time we say them was the 60% goku uniform experiment
[14:26] Or is that a clever commentary on business culture?
01[14:26] The stockholders have always all looked identical.
01[14:26] And yes.
[14:26] It’s a stylistic choice. The good guys tend to be individually distinct. The bad guys tend to be interchangeable.
[14:27] It’s the Clothing Instrumentality Project
01[14:27] Oh look, Deus.
[14:27] Lavos can fly now.
01[14:27] And/or Giant Space Buttplug.
[14:28] Yep, Mako is going to… what is she doing?
[14:28] “And you can’t get dressed up for a date?”
[14:28] Being Mako.
[14:28] I got about 25% of the references in this sequence
[14:28] Ad.
[14:29] Back.
01[14:29] So yeah, now Mako’s wearing Senketsu, this’ll end well.
[14:29] MAKO is going to wear Senketsu?
[14:30] Oh, Nui, you shouldn’t have said that
01[14:30] “Fool, no human can defeat me.”
[14:30] (or wait, you should have, since I want to see you get obliterated)
01[14:30] “I AM NO HUMAN.”
[14:30] Whoa
[14:30] Satsuki can even do psychological warfare
[14:31] Oh jeez
[14:31] Well, Ryuko has a point there…
[14:31] Wait, what?
[14:32] Even Mako disapproves of this plan.
[14:32] Ouch
[14:32] That’s gonna be painful
[14:32] Oh hey, callback to the first episode.
01[14:32] Oh for fuck’s sake, not ANOTHER rape-y reference with Senketsu.
[14:32] HUH?
[14:32] Ad.
[14:32] Wait, did Mako just get sucked inside too?
[14:32] Yup.
[14:33] Nightmare Fuel if there ever was any
[14:33] I’m back.
[14:33] Uh… huh?
01[14:34] I don’t think Mako was expecting her to CALL that bluff.
[14:34] Wait, how much of this is actually happening?
01[14:34] Physically? None I think.
[14:34] Hard to say.
[14:34] My god, this whole final arc really is an Evangelion reference
[14:35] Hey, it’s the stuff from that time Ryuko went berzerk
[14:35] Well, TRIGGER’s made up of people who used to work at Gainax, so…
[14:35] WHOA
[14:35] I mean, Nui won’t go down that easy, but still, that’s awesome
[14:35] Eww
[14:35] This is all kinds of disturbing
01[14:36] Well, that is a thing that happened.
01[14:36] Any after-credits stuff this episode?
[14:36] I don’t think that credit sequence will ever be appropriate.
[14:36] Oh, of course, THAT would be the cliffhanger
[14:36] I think it’s just the episode preview again
[14:37] My brain is attempting to process what just happened
[14:37] Jumping forward to check
[14:37] Yeah, it’s pv only
[14:37] (or “unravel,” as would probably be a more appropriate term)
[14:37] A journey into Ryuko’s heart. Literally.

Chatlog below the cut!

[14:00] Ah yes, when we left off, Ryuko had entered her latest identity crisis
[14:00] Opening ads were pre-watched?
[14:00] Way status: Lost
[14:00] …Good answer, come to think of it
[14:00] Oh great
01[14:01] “Oh, Ryuko, don’t say that! ANYTHING can be killed, including you.”
[14:01] I love the visuals in the second opening
01[14:02] I’m not a huge fan of the show’s art style, tbh, but the opening does some interesting stuff with it.
01[14:02] I assume we all have an ad at the end of the credits?
[14:02] Ad.
01[14:02] (Of course, mine’ll probably be 5 ads or something)
01[14:02] Ad.
[14:03] Wait… is this a replica of both of them, or a remote-control interface?
01[14:03] Don’t forget to annoucne when your ad starts and ends, they may be different lengths!
[14:03] I’m done.
01[14:03] Sylo: Did you not pause for ads?
01[14:03] Mine is still going.
[14:03] Sorry, missed it… pausing now
01[14:03] Back.
[14:03] There
[14:04] Ragyo is gonna go down hard
[14:04] Is that a rhetorical question?
01[14:05] I’m guessing it’s some kind of remote interface, and they’ve both been absorbed into the Clothing Collective or whatever it’s called.
[14:05] And Gamagoori gets out-embiggened.
[14:05] “Mon amie?” seriously?
01[14:05] Yeah, I *just* hit “Mon amie*
[14:05] Those two are all about the gratuitous French.
[14:06] (I’m at 5:15)
01[14:06] Um, that is LITERALLY the opposite of the truth, Ryuko.
01[14:06] You were born human and infused with Life Fiber, remember?
[14:07] Well, she was a few hours old at the time.
[14:07] Her father would have had to arrange for her death to be faked in advance of the experiment in order to pull it off
[14:08] Yeah, Ragyo’s full of crap. But it’s crap that Ryuko fears is the case.
[14:08] So, are they going to all go rescue Satsuki while Ryuko’s making her quasi-suicidal charge against Ragyo?
01[14:09] Point. I’ve definitely seen that be dangerously effective on people IRL.
[14:09] Ahaha… that was a cute moment
01[14:09] So far this episode Mako is actually not completely horrible and slightly likeable, I will admit.
[14:09] Yep… they’re all gonna rescue Satsuki
01[14:09] I’m sure she’ll fuck it up soon enough.
[14:10] Ad.
[14:10] Gah
[14:10] So, is that toenail thing signalling?
[14:10] (I’m paused at 9:18, where’s everyone else?)
01[14:10] 9:08.
[14:10] 9:04
[14:11] My timer is counting down
[14:11] Back.
[14:11] Yep, it’s a signal
[14:11] Arrlaari, try clicking the timer.
01[14:11] I think she’s sharpening her toenails.
01[14:11] Ha, I was right.
[14:12] Hey, it’s that guy again
[14:12] (My timer didn’t change when I clicked it)
[14:12] The heck…
01[14:12] Their base is a mech.
01[14:12] OF COURSE their base is a mech.
[14:12] Why wouldn’t their base be a mech?
[14:13] Wow, all the one-off minibosses are coming back to help too!
01[14:13] OMG it’s the Dai-Gurren.
[14:13] The ship doesn’t look as phallic as I’d thought it would
[14:13] Sadly without flippers and an oar.
[14:13] I’m definitely a bit ahead of you guys
[14:14] “The best selective hearing.” “Mental earplugs.”
[14:14] my timer is 11:52, counting down
01[14:14] Ad.
01[14:14] I’m at the guy on shore saluting and turning all paint-ish.
[14:14] What was the last thing before your ad, Froborr?
[14:14] I’m paused at 12:19 remaining
[14:15] I’m paused at 12:18 out of 24:27
[14:15] And thank you for an excuse to pause on that fantastic frame.
[14:15] Yeah, that guy looks awesome
01[14:15] Back.
[14:15] Oh, hey, I have an ad in like, two seconds.
[14:16] Sorry.
01[14:16] NP.
[14:16] Oops
01[14:16] What’s the last thing before your ad?
[14:16] Just after the salute.
01[14:16] OK.
[14:16] The time counts up when moused over the timeline
[14:17] Back.
[14:17] I think we’re relatively resynced now
[14:17] Now that’s an entrance
[14:18] They remind me of Nuku Nuku and Eimi Yoshikawa
01[14:18] OK, that was pretty badass of Ragyo.
[14:18] In that one skirmish, at least
01[14:19] WOW Sylo, that is a show I haven’t thought of in YEARS.
[14:19] That was my very first anime
[14:19] Remind me to comment about that later
[14:19] Ah, Satsuki makes her own jailbreak
01[14:19] Oh, false toenails, that’s a little more reasonable than slicing steel with chitin.
[14:20] Shades of Metal Gear Solid 2
[14:20] Nui is evil
01[14:20] Fuck.
[14:20] Whoa
[14:20] I was not expecting that to work
[14:20] Aaaaaand it didn’t
[14:21] Eww
01[14:21] Ah, so Nui is the one who actually WAS clothing from the start.
[14:21] Ahahah
[14:21] “My growing list of siblings”
[14:22] Yeesh
[14:22] Is Satsuki going to wear Junketsu now?
01[14:22] That’s what I’m guessing.
[14:22] That will be awesome
[14:22] “You’ll catch cold.” Awesome
[14:23] Is this a reference to the Star Child in 2001?
01[14:24] Rewriting her memory with a lifetime as Ragyo’s daughter?
[14:24] And, because rape of the body wasn’t enough…
[14:25] This is Ragyo’s sickest trick yet
[14:25] And that’s saying something
01[14:25] Of course Mako will talk her down next episode.
01[14:26] Possibly after a fight in which Satsuki wears Senketsu.
[14:26] Yep… Satsuki’s gonna wear Senketsu
01[14:26] Already is, I suspect.
[14:26] Note that this is what Satsuki was fighting to prevent every time she wore Junketsu.
[14:26] Eeyup
01[14:26] Yep.
[14:27] Awesome
[14:27] Notable: This version of Junketsu is covering a lot more than before
[14:27] Well, not as much more than I rememberred
[14:27] Even though Satsuki is taller (I think)
01[14:27] Ad.
[14:27] Heck of a lot more than normal, Arrlaari.
[14:27] We’re at the credits.
01[14:28] Well that makes sense–Satsuki is taller, therefore the same amount of cloth leaves more blank space.
01[14:28] Is there anything after credits on this one?
[14:28] Well, there are individual leg-dresses that weren’t present before
01[14:28] True.
[14:28] I forget
01[14:28] More cloth for more control over the wearer?
[14:29] Well, that was… interesting
[14:29] It’s just a preview after the credits
[14:29] The boss battle against the now-evil protagonist, another RPG staple.
01[14:29] Yep.
[14:30] I must have played a very different set of RPGs than you two
[14:30] Of course… though I don’t recall many RPGs using brainwashing of quite this sort
01[14:30] Lunar?
[14:30] Nope
01[14:30] Though of course, like most JRPG story elements from the 90s on, it’s rooted in manga cliches.
[14:30] Of course
01[14:31] You mean specifically the rewriting of memories?
[14:31] Yeah, I remember that a lot more from manga/anime than from Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger
[14:31] Ah yes, SMRPG
[14:31] Yeah, Mario isn’t exactly one to get seduced by the Dark Side.
[14:31] Though Luigi was, in Super Paper Mario
[14:32] (Dimentio was one of the more disturbing villains in a major Nintendo franchise)
01[14:32] Well, those are both before the switchover. Up through the SNES, most JRPGs relied mostly on Western sources for their stories. With the introduction of optical media and cutscenes, they began hiring more anime people and drawing more on anime character and story cliches.
[14:33] Well, yeah, but Luigi can cause time-space distortions through sheer resentment.
01[14:33] I really need to play more Super Paper Mario.
[14:33] I like the Dream Team take a bit better
[14:33] Bowser’s Inside Story was great btw
[14:33] Super Paper Mario was a great, if extremely bizarre, game
01[14:33] Which Dream Team are you referring to, the Chronotrigger team?
[14:33] Mainly because it lets you spend a lot of time with Bowser
[14:34] Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
[14:34] 3DS mario rpg
[14:34] I was referring to that game’s take on Luigi
01[14:34] Ah.
[14:34] I’ve never played the Mario & Luigi games, come to think of it… I’ve been meaning to
01[14:34] I’ve never played any of them either…
[14:34] They’re fun, though I haven’t played Dream Team.
01[14:35] But I have played all the Mario RPG games, though Mario RPG and Paper Mario are the only ones I’ve played to completion.
[14:35] I’ve played the Paper Mario series (well, the first three, anyway)
[14:35] I’ve only played Inside Story and Dream Team. I liked Inside Story better.
[14:35] Ah, Legend of the Seven Stars… I remember for some reason, Shy Away was my favorite thing in that game.
01[14:35] Mine was Culex. Spot on parody of the FF games.
[14:36] And all the little touches, like Grate Guy’s Casino
[14:36] Ah, of course, Culex
[14:36] Which one was Culex?
01[14:36] The optional boss. Culex, Dark Knight of Vanda.
[14:36] The optional superboss with the crystals and the FFIV boss battle music
[14:37] The strategy guide told you to save up all your Rock Candy so you could spam him with it
[14:37] Oh yeah, the one who just happens to be living in an apartment in the monster town
[14:37] As you do.

[14:38] I mostly liked the Smithy goons
[14:38] Axem Rangers, Bowyer, the guy who impersonates an entire city, et. al.
[14:38] Let’s see, the Seaside Town dude was a spear iirc?
[14:39] Yaridovich
[14:39] Oh, and Booster!
[14:39] (what does that name mean, anyway?)
[14:39] It’s probably a kind of spear
[14:39] Booster wasn’t a Smithy goon, though, he was just a very unstable rich guy
[14:39] All of the Smithy minions are weapons. Dagger, Bow, Spear, Axes, Sword
[14:40] The non-Smithy bosses were a colorful sort… Jonathan Jones was my fave, though extremely annoying

[14:00] Ah yes… when we last left off, FUCK YEAH SATSUKI[14:00] I mean, it’s still way too early for that attack to work (unless Nui is the final boss after all, which I doubt), but still… You go girl!
[14:00] Ooh, truncated opening?
[14:00] And a reversal of her opening Orwellianism.
[14:00] Ad.
03[14:01] * ChanServ sets mode: +o Sylocat
[14:02] Almost done… 🙁
[14:02] Ready.
[14:03] Ooh, that acupuncture technique works
[14:03] Huh… I was expecting Mataro to have to save everyone
[14:03] Wait, do they already know that being impaled won’t stop Ragyo? Now that’s genre savvy
[14:04] Well, HE’S genre blind, anyway
[14:04] Naturally.
[14:04] Worst. Covert communications. Ever.
[14:05] Wait, where did those screens come from?
[14:05] Science!
[14:05] I think they’re part of the stadium design.
[14:05] Gee, I wonder why Satsuki wouldn’t have qualms about stabbing you in the back, Ragyo…
01[14:05] Think I’m a little too far ahead.
[14:05] Dang, Satsuki was prepared
[14:06] (nah, I just took too long to type that)
[14:06] Huh?
[14:06] WHOA! Even he took her by surprise!
[14:07] Of course, Collar McDatapants has to spoil the poetic dialogue
[14:07] “Um, Actually”
[14:07] Eeyup
[14:07] I thought the same thing.
[14:07] GO NONON
01[14:07] Yeah, Nonon!
[14:07] They almost had her on the ropes for a bit
[14:08] Ad.
[14:08] Just to clarify, where is everyone? I’m paused at 6:19
[14:08] Done.
[14:08] Aww, he really cares about Mako
01[14:08] Just behind that by a couple seconds.
[14:09] Right about there.
[14:09] Of course, THAT works
[14:09] “When did you turn against me?” Gee, I wonder when
[14:11] Ragyo Kiryuin: Also a mad scientist.
[14:11] For a moment, I almost thought Ragyo cared about her newborn kid
[14:11] “Monologuing,” she calls it
[14:12] Backstory doesn’t tell itself, director
[14:12] Dang, Satsuki really is genre savvy
[14:12] If Metroid taught us anything, it’s that the parasitic aliens are weak to cold.
[14:12] She knew she’d have to overprepare
[14:12] WHOA
[14:13] But of course, Ragyo is even more powerful
01[14:14] Yes, bringing an army of mooks against the mind control parasites *does* tend to backfire.
01[14:14] She’s not *that* genre savvy.
[14:14] Of course, Ragyo is also dumb enough to think that said army of mooks will be enough to take on the characters who have already got said mooks working for them
[14:14] The thread spools Ragyo uses here were on her desk in the scene where Rei is reporting that their clothes were being stolen
[14:14] Really? I missed that
[14:15] It was a few episodes back
[14:15] So, when is Senketsu gonna interfere?
[14:15] Okay, that’s just cheating
[14:16] Ad.
[14:16] Nui’s powers have no rules
[14:16] She’s been called “Evil Pinkie” for reasons other than her color scheme.
[14:16] Of course
[14:16] She even went to the mirror pool
[14:17] I’m back.
01[14:17] I am doubtful this fight scene can last another 8 episodes, so I wonder how they separate everyone.
[14:17] Ooh, Ragyo, don’t say “She’ll never be able to…”
01[14:18] Oh.
01[14:18] Of course.
[14:18] (what am I saying? Go ahead and say that, Ragyo, since it’ll lead to your destruction)
01[14:18] Her one red hair is a life fiber.
01[14:18] She’s that baby they discarded.
[14:18] Yes, she just reached in through her own skull.
[14:18] Uh oh
[14:19] Outright mind control won’t work, but pushing her buttons will
01[14:20] Yeah, shonen heroes are never hard to manipulate.
[14:20] On the other hand, her theme song is playing.
[14:21] “Never given a name.” Come on
[14:21] Ooh, cutting off the head works? She’s a Highlander?
[14:21] Uh oh… her blood raining down, will that turn into Life Fibers?
[14:21] And in the end, Satsuki and Ryuko have the same motivation: avenging a father.
[14:22] Oh, it’s the Life Fiber itself that goes berserk now
01[14:22] Ah, of course.
[14:22] Or not
[14:22] Come on, Ryuko… KO Nui and cut that last thread…
[14:23] Eww
[14:23] Oh come on
01[14:24] Ew.
[14:24] Ryuko was supposed to interfere
[14:24] It’s not hard to guess what “ew” is for.
[14:24] Is this another Evangelion reference?
[14:25] I don’t believe so.
[14:26] Well duh
[14:26] I’m surprised everyone hadn’t figured that out by now
01[14:26] I had.
[14:26] Wait, where are the Elite Four while all this is going on? I didn’t see Nui’s copies take them out
[14:26] Pictured: Froborr http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20061211092134/wikiality/images/d/d2/ICalledIt.jpg
[14:26] They were being distracted by Ragyo’s secretary.
[14:26] Are they going to interfere and save them next episode (don’t answer that)?

[14:27] (I tried to find an animated gif but not enough time)
01[14:27] lol
[14:27] Since episode 3!
[14:27] Incidentally, one of the ways to translate “Ryuko Matoi”? Abandoned child. Remember how terrible her father was at naming things?
01[14:27] Okay, that’s pretty funny.
01[14:28] Anyway, final thoughts?
[14:28] So yeah, I’m feeling desirous of seeing Ragyo get killed in many different horrible ways
[14:28] Basically I’ve been planning to link a Colbert “called it” image here since episode 3
[14:28] I’m quite glad I was at least able to do that while travelling
01[14:29] And I appreciate it!
[14:29] I haven’t seen Eva, but it’s my impression that Gendo was a contender for worst anime parent ever
[14:30] I’m reasonably certain that he can’t compete with Ragyo, though
01[14:30] Yeah, Gendo was emotionally distant and neglectful.
01[14:30] Ragyo is sexually abusive of one child and abandoned the other.
[14:30] Well, she performed a life threatening experiment on the other and was convinced she had died
[14:31] On a lighter note, props to Soroi for running while carrying about a dozen people at the age of sixty-something.

Chatlog below the cut!

01[14:00] Satsuki looks weird wearing Junketsu like a normal outfit.
01[14:01] I like her military-ish uniform better.
[14:01] “Ragyo Stadium.” So humble.
01[14:02] The way the characters’ outfits flip around in the OP reminds me of watching someone play a fighting game.
01[14:02] Like, swapping alts on the Character Select screen.
[14:03] Ad.
01[14:03] k
01[14:04] ?
[14:05] And I’m back.
[14:05] Frakking Hulu.
[14:05] Ah, I got distracted and didn’t see that we were waiting for an ad
[14:06] I’m just after Mako’s speech.
[14:06] Where Senketsu reminds everyone that his opinion kind of matters.
01[14:06] Blah blah Ryuko blah Mako blah
01[14:06] Get back to the student council, they’re way more interesting and entertaining.
01[14:08] Wait, so now his crotch glows even when she has pants on?
01[14:08] *he has pants
[14:08] Oh, there are no pants.
[14:08] It’s really more of a belt than pants
01[14:08] Oh, I see now. Camera angle made it look like cargo pants.
[14:09] And now my favorite character in the show. And Satsuki.
01[14:09] lol
01[14:09] Satoi is a pretty good butler in the Alfred vein, yeah.
[14:10] Ad.
[14:10] This reminds me of the comment about Matoi saying Satsuki is alone
01[14:10] Yeah, some of her minions really are very nearly friends/family.
[14:10] Rather objectively wrong at this point.
[14:10] She was, in fact, wrong about that, but it’s understandable that she would believe it.
01[14:11] Like Satoi and whatsername, band geek girl.
[14:11] Nonon
[14:11] I’m back.
[14:11] Remember that whenever Matoi has seen Satsuki treat one of the elite four as anything other than disposable tools, Ryuko has questioned it
[14:11] “are you going soft” or similar
01[14:11] Point.
[14:12] A friendship mediated by a strongly heirarchical power relationship isn’t something Matoi has experienced or understands.
01[14:13] Well, I mean, such a thing *is* inherently unstable and unsustainable.
[14:13] And art shift.
01[14:14] *eyeroll at the Obnoxious Family*
[14:14] At least they care.
01[14:15] Ah, so there’s our apocalypse.
[14:16] Ad.
[14:16] Last one, and shortest.
[14:17] And I’m back.
[14:18] The Revocs building always reminds me of Madoka’s witch form.
01[14:18] THAT’S what it is!
01[14:18] Thanks, that’s been bugging me.
[14:18] NP 🙂
01[14:22] DEATH TO ALL CUPS!
[14:22] Who’s going to sweep it up, I ask you?
[14:22] It’s like an Olympic opening ceremony.
[14:23] There are a number of traditions involving smashing ones cup after a toast
01[14:23] The fact that Mataro’s not in a uniform is going to be very significant, of course.
[14:23] And then Rahyo was Kefka.
01[14:23] Only question is whether that screws up Ragyo’s plans or Satsuki’s or both.
01[14:23] Are you suggesting Ragyo has ever not been Kefka?
[14:24] Point.
01[14:25] “Have fun storming the castle!”
[14:26] Miracle Mako, ladies and gentlemen.
01[14:27] WHAT A TWEEST
01[14:27] That’s been obvious for like a dozen episodes…
[14:28] And the always-inapporpriate second ending credits.
01[14:28] Although I have to admit, I was expecting Satsuki to ask Ryuko to join her, rather than just backstab her mom and declare herself to be in rebellion.
01[14:29] I’m still counting this as satisfying my prediction that their team-up would happen this episode.
[14:29] Do you really think Ryuko would say yes?
01[14:30] I think, given her new knowledge of the Life Fiber thing and wanting to kill whatsername, the fashion designer, it’s quite possible she would.
[14:30] Anyway, I hear that smashing cups after drinking from them like Satsuki & the elite four did there is a thing traditionally done before going into a battle
01[14:31] I figured it was probably something like that.
01[14:31] But is declaring war on cups any sillier than declaring war on clothes?
[14:31] It depends on whether or not the cups are made out of aliens.
01[14:31] Point.
[14:32] To follow up on earlier, with Satsuki’s friendships being mediated by dominance
[14:33] It’s notable that her meetings with each of her elite four follow roughly this pattern: The future shittenou challenges her, she overwhelms the challenge, and then says “that was cool, you can hang out with me”
[14:33] At first, Jakuzure Nonon’s story looks like the exception, but if you think about it, Nonon was trying to patronize Satsuki
01[14:33] Well yeah, it’s the Defeat Means Friendship thing.
01[14:34] Very common way to form a gang in shonen.
01[14:34] What’s odd is that she maintains such a hierarchical structure and dominant position afterwards.
[14:35] The sandcastle was offered with these words: “because you’re my favorite” and the offer was couched in an ostentatious display of Nonon’s popularity among the other tiny children
[14:35] Says something about who Satsuki is, really. She needs to be at the forefront.
01[14:36] Sure, I can buy that as the same challenge/defeat structure.
01[14:38] So, any final thoughts before I post this up?
[14:38] You’ve mentioned before
[14:39] That people have told you that there is a point at which this show gets a lot better. I can’t speak for them, but they may have been referring to the end of this episode, and making a pun on the point of Satsuki’s sword.
01[14:40] Lol, no, I’m pretty sure the exact wording didn’t use the word “point.”
01[14:40] Still, though, if this is where that improvement happens, good, because I am definitely bored pretty much any time Satsuki’s offscreen.
[14:41] See you next week, then.
01[14:41] No, week after.
[14:41] Convention next weekend
[14:41] Ah, right. Thanks for the reminder.
01[14:41] Next week I’m at AUSA and can’t do it, yep.

  01[14:00] This opening is… different.
[14:00] … Senketsu is the announcer now?
01[14:00] Oh FFS.
[14:00] A compilation episode. Of course.
01[14:00] They’re doing the whole compilation episode in one cold open, aren’t they?
[14:01] At least he’s getting through it fast
[14:01] Though I am having unpleasant His And Her Circumstances flashbacks
[14:01] Point to Ryuko
01[14:01] Okay, official third-best clip show ever.
[14:01] “caterpillar-eyebrowed?”
01[14:02] New opening?
[14:02] Ooh, new theme song
[14:02] and it’s good so far
[14:02] Wow
[14:02] That was an interesting character intro
01[14:02] Heavy emphasis on clothes, which made sense.
[14:03] That’s… more blood than this show usually spills
01[14:03] Like the fight scene there.
[14:03] So, by showing both Ryuko and Satsuki trapped by their own Life Fibers
01[14:03] Hmm, implied, uh, “scissoring” eh?
01[14:04] Oh, severe blood loss.
[14:04] They’re setting up the inevitable team-up against Satsuki’s mom
01[14:04] Unpleasant.
01[14:04] Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. Same with image of that team standing between the two opposing sides.
[14:05] Her servants’ names are “Soroi” and “Iori?”
[14:05] Ah, of course Nui buts in
[14:06] “Still underway?” I thought they won a while ago
[14:06] He has a shiny weenie
[14:07] Gee, that’s totally going to discourage Mako
[14:07] Eeyup
[14:08] A water level?
[14:08] Huh… sad music all of a sudden?
[14:08] (am I still connected?)
[14:08] yes
[14:09] Eww
[14:09] That is disturbing
01[14:09] Um, no.
01[14:09] I do not like this sequence.
01[14:09] This is NOT okay.
[14:09] So this is one of the episodes that a lot of people bailed out of watching the show after.
[14:10] Gee, I wonder why
01[14:10] Okay, yeah, and the chakras, that was definitely a tantric thing.
[14:11] For a while, I thought Ragyo might be a puppet and Nui was the real Big Bad, but… no. Not after that scene
01[14:11] Yeah, that was pretty horrifying.
[14:11] Dafuq
[14:11] Oh, Mako
[14:12] *headdesks*
01[14:12] Not true!
01[14:12] Several animals make and wear hats.
[14:12] It’s movie science
01[14:12] Including elephantsw and trapdoor spiders.
[14:13] Whoa
[14:13] Trippy
[14:13] …Don’t tell me this is an Eva reference
[14:13] This show says “humans were born to be a creature that would serve clothing” with an almost straight face
01[14:13] Suddenly this is a dark Ambush Bug crossover.
[14:13] Eeyup, this is totally an Evangelion reference
01[14:14] Yeah, the suit wavered just like 2D Shinji in the finale.
[14:14] Ah, the Martian Panspermia Event
01[14:14] Oh man, not just referencing Eva but the Red Cross Book.
[14:15] The movie science is strong with this one
[14:15] And now it’s a 2001 reference
01[14:15] Yep.
[14:16] Ah, so Senketsu is going through the “vampire doesn’t want to hurt humans” character arc
[14:17] Whoa
[14:17] I should have seen this coming, but I didn’t
[14:18] Trippy
01[14:19] So he’s not so much “vampire doesn’t want to kill humans” as “vampire born to kill vampires.” So Blade or Alucard (Castlevania).
[14:19] Ah, good point
[14:19] Wait, if the Primordial Life Fiber guided human evolution, doesn’t it already control humanity effectively?
01[14:19] Oh.
01[14:19] Of course.
01[14:20] OF COURSE the school cultural festival will be the final arc.
[14:20] Oh, it’s Ragyo who wants to alter it for evil
[14:20] Ah, the Culture Festival
[14:20] “A haunted house? A cafe?”
01[14:20] “An alien invasion?”
[14:20] Or a stuffed animal exhibit, as Sakaki would request
[14:20] Hmm, now I’m picturing dolls brought to life by their own clothes as well
[14:21] I wondered how much longer that shot was going to go on
01[14:21] Ryuko’s response IS pretty great.
[14:22] Oh, of course, now he WANTS her to wear the outfit
[14:22] This guy needs a smackdown, stat
01[14:22] Normally I’d be complaining that the series hasn’t remotely done the ground work to make me feel anything about Senketsu being a weapon, but I’ve been watching Saikano all morning so *blubs*
01[14:22] Must be serious, it’s gone watercolor!
[14:22] That’s how it leaves off, because OF COURSE that’s how it leaves off
[14:23] Hmm… I like the new opening theme, but I think I prefer the old closing theme
01[14:23] Anyway, so, this episode was the reveal of the info that gets Satsuki and Ryuko to team up, I’m pretty sure.
[14:23] Eeyup
01[14:23] If my predictions are true, they will therefore actually team up next episode.
[14:23] No way can Satsuki avoid rebelling after THAT
[14:23] My memory of when the second OP appears was mistaken
[14:23] I thought that didn’t happen until a couple of episodes from now
01[14:24] Well, I think her final scene was pretty much confirmation of her intention to rebel.
01[14:24] The way she says “We’ll be ready for you?” after her mom leaves?
01[14:24] I mean, come on.
01[14:24] “You scratch my lapels, I scratch yours.” LOL
[14:24] Yeah, that was a great line
01[14:25] Okay, I’m off to squeeze in another episode of Saikano and then come back for Sailor Moon.
01[14:25] Wait, before that: final thoughts on episode?
[14:25] Alrighty then… wish I could stay for that
01[14:25] (Sorry, in a rush, I have to finish the series, finish the panel I’m watching it for, and write the next MLP article by midnight.
01[14:25] )
[14:25] Well, aside from… THAT SCENE, this is a nice development epis
01[14:25] Yeah.
01[14:26] Trying not to think about that scene, because uck.
[14:26] I have some stuff to say about the rape scene
[14:26] It might take a while and it might be better to leave it alone
01[14:26] That was the worst stuff since episode 1.
01[14:26] Why don’t you write it up as a comment on the blog?
[14:26] I’ll do that.
[14:27] That makes Mako’s family look even cuter and more harmless than the show seems to think they are
[14:28] (replace “harmless” with “lovable”)

01[14:05] Digging this music for Mr. Motorcycle.
[14:05] This is actually meant to be Senketsu’s theme.
01[14:05] Shortened opening?
01[14:05] Huh.
[14:05] You can tell a lot about an anime character by what it takes to make them say “This is horrible…”
[14:05] Ooh
01[14:06] “What’s mistaken is your brain?”
01[14:06] Wow, that’s a localization fail.
[14:06] I love her trash talk
01[14:06] I normally do, but “what’s mistaken is your brain” is just terrible.
[14:07] Capitalism, folks
[14:07] Satsuki took the Dazzling Display feat.
[14:07] Wow
01[14:08] Oh man, I played a… what were they called? Bladesingers? Swordsingers? Anyway, I played one back in 2E.
[14:08] And now, a giant enemy crab.
[14:08] Capitalist used self-destruct!
[14:08] Oh wait..
[14:08] Ooh, nice mecha there
01[14:08] I imagine she’ll be hitting its weak point for massive damage at some point.
[14:08] AHAHAHAH
01[14:08] It IS a nice mecha, though.
[14:08] “When you’re weak, say something strong very forcefully!”
01[14:09] Isn’t “golden crab” a saying or something?
[14:09] “Americamura?”
[14:10] Did he seriously say “Nobody could’ve survived that?”
[14:10] Ah, Collar McDatapants to the rescue
[14:10] An airdroped closet. I love those.
01[14:10] This is such blatant fascist propaganda. Typical repurposing of socialist depictions of the evil excesses of capitalism, but with the Mighty Hero or Great Leader as the key to defeating it rather than the collective action of the people.
[14:11] The last piece of Ryuko’s outfit is in Monkey’s new uniform?
[14:11] Nope. Satsuki’s wearing it.
01[14:11] Interesting, he’s doing the most basic kendo practice form over and over.
[14:11] Specifically, the glove with the transform pin on it
[14:12] Ah, but the Mighty Hero and Great Leader are villains too, remember
[14:12] Ouch
01[14:12] True… ish.
[14:12] Striking the weak point for massive damage. As predicted.
01[14:13] It’ll depend rather heavily on whether they end up joining Ryuko to fight EvilCorp or she joins them.
[14:13] The symbolism is horrific, as is probably intentional
[14:14] Are they shipping Mako and Gamagoori?
01[14:14] I think they might be?
[14:15] If so, that would be awesome
[14:15] Man, his Pokédex has a retro interface
[14:16] Every screen on the show is low-res monchrome. For some reason.
01[14:16] Ah, are we finally going to get fully introduced to Nudist Beach?
[14:16] I half expected him to enter by shouting, “Will you two get a room already!”
[14:17] “Lazy” teacher? He thinks his flaw as a teacher was laziness
01[14:17] I think the idea is that our displays have lower fidelity than our reality, so since their reality exists within our displays, their displays are lower fidelity than that.
01[14:17] Are we finally getting the Villain Team Combining Mecha?
01[14:18] No, just all fighting at once.
[14:18] Wait, they actually SAY that “Nudist Beach” is a silly name?
[14:18] Alas. That would’ve been awesome.
[14:18] Ooh, I like their new mecha designs
01[14:18] Okay, that line of Mako’s was actually a little cute.
[14:18] Ahahah
01[14:18] She’s still annoying though.
[14:19] Ah, this is the “use my life energy” gambit
01[14:19] Theme music power up activated!
[14:19] Friendship is magic clothing.
01[14:19] lol FoME
[14:19] Ahaha… Senketsu looks cute hopping after her like that
[14:20] My god… Gamagoori actually does care about Mao
[14:20] Mako
01[14:20] The music in this episode is really good.
01[14:21] Was this the same composer as Gurren Lagann?
[14:21] Those teeth
01[14:21] I’m really liking this track, it’s like Gurren Lagann Does Metroid Prime.
[14:21] Ryuko as Samus Aran. There’s a thought.
[14:21] Ooh, the Master Sword got knocked away
01[14:21] Huh, Satsuki can’t fly.
[14:22] Hopefully she has the Biggoron sword handy until she gets it back
[14:22] Nonon to the rescue?
[14:22] No Biggoron Sword, but she can make Wolverine claws.
01[14:22] Oh, Satsuki gets Bionic Commando powers instead of flight, that works.
01[14:23] “Even if it’s you.” Yeah, time to call FedEx methinks.
[14:24] D’awww
[14:24] Truly an epic battle of wills that one.
[14:24] WHOA
[14:24] Now that was a neat trick
01[14:25] Oh crap, a drill! Satsuki’s got Spiral Power too!
[14:25] Because that always calms everything right down
[14:25] Kamuis are literally powered by hot blood. Of course she does.
01[14:26] SHE HAS AN ARMY OF LOYAL FOLLOWERS, HOW IS SHE ALONE
01[14:26] Does Ryuko EVER think before she talks?
01[14:26] Obviously no, but still.
[14:26] Whoa
[14:26] Nonon interrupts!
01[14:27] Damn, well played villain team.
01[14:27] Nonon of course continues to be the best of the Four.
[14:27] I did not see that coming
01[14:28] Ah, we’re past the halfway mark, time for the Reveal I see.
01[14:28] Okay, so, I’m a bit strapped for time again this weekend, so… final thoughts?
[14:29] I do like Collar McDatapants’s upgraded uniform. He’s made of data now.
[14:29] So, how many more eps before Ryuko and Satsuki team up against Nui and Satsuki’s mom? (don’t answer that)
01[14:29] Yes, I think it’s the best of the redesigns.
[14:30] See you all next week, then?
[14:30] Full warning: Not sure whether or not I’ll be able to make it next weekend
01[14:30] Given that next ep is the reveal, and I suspect part of the reveal will be finding out that Satsuki and Ryuko are sisters, I’m guessing the episode after that. (do not answer whether any of this is correct)
[14:30] Well, you’ll see me next weekend
[14:30] I’m in SeaTac visiting relatives for two weeks… I’ve been staying at a bunch of different places
01[14:30] Yep, I’ll be here.
01[14:30] First weekend in October I’ll be at another con, though, so no chat that weekend.
[14:31] So you’re expecting two episodes of Reveal?
01[14:31] No, one episode of Reveal, then they team up the next episode.
01[14:32] I’m expecting the teamup to be an episode after Ryuko learns whatever it is that makes her change her mind about teaming up.

[14:00] When we left off…
[14:00] Ah yes, the “sit bolt upright from a nightmare”
[14:00] Ew
01[14:00] Oh yeah, Senketsu got shredded.
[14:00] Wait, she still has the Scissor Blade?
[14:00] Ahahahah
[14:01] Well, at least he didn’t delude himself that he saved her from Nui
[14:02] There’s a phrase you don’t hear every day
[14:02] Ooh, new outfit
01[14:02] New, WAY BETTER outfit.
[14:02] Wait, he was fired? Or he quit?
[14:02] Uh oh
[14:02] Albeit one that doesn’t give superpowers.
[14:02] Ahahah…
[14:02] “Nude Shooting Star”
[14:03] That’s a very good question.
[14:03] I’d say he was fired for being an unprofessional perv, but that doesn’t seem like a deal-breaker at this particular academy
01[14:03] More like a requirement, tbqh.
[14:04] Exactly
[14:04] And Mako is currently being brought along the raid trip like a hostage
[14:04] Possibly a consequence.
[14:04] Awesome. The no-ad deal Hulu offered me actually worked.
[14:04] Cool
[14:05] So, the other three Elite Four are running the raid teams, while Collar McDatapants is Satsuki’s backup at mission control?
01[14:06] …why is their school a boat?
[14:06] And managing the information warfare.
[14:06] oh, nice hair
[14:06] Why not?
[14:06] Ahaha… the American school, of course
01[14:06] Okay, the American School is pretty funny.
[14:06] Yeah, this should go well
[14:07] AHAHAH
[14:07] Dat literalization of figures of speech
[14:07] “Full Metal.” Wow
01[14:07] Magic school?
[14:07] IT’S A TRAP!
01[14:08] Oh, I’m going to like Magic School vs. Marching Band, aren’t I?
[14:08] Wow, so some of these WON’T be curbstomps?
[14:08] Ooh, this is gonna be an awesome battle
[14:08] Is this a Harry Potter reference?
[14:08] And Four Guardians motif is go.
01[14:08] lol @ Byakko.
[14:09] Uh oh… don’t tempt fate, Nonoi
[14:09] Because of course he can project tangible holograms
01[14:09] “merely a hologram projected by the Film Club,” is that all?
[14:09] Oh wow… this is an epic fight
[14:10] “Please state the nature of the technobabble emergency.”
[14:10] Ooh, neuroscience
01[14:10] Did… did he just defeat the Four Guardians with the power of an Escher loop?
[14:10] Ahah… Nonoi puts it best
[14:11] I love Nonoi’s special moves, have I mentioned that enough times?
01[14:11] Noo, go back to Nonoi being awesome!
[14:11] Oh yikes
[14:11] Social commentary: Old ladies and gossip!
[14:12] Why does he have “ZEN!” on his teeth?
[14:12] Heh. Money clips.
[14:12] I think Zeni i a word that has to do with money?
[14:12] MORE social commentary
[14:12] Of course not, monkey, they’re special paper!
[14:13] Ooh, it’s more visually interesting than actual money, I’ll give them that
[14:13] “youse?”
01[14:13] The Osakan accent is often rendered as Brooklyn in English, IIRC.
[14:13] See Sailor Moon.
[14:13] Ah… I’ve heard it rendered as southern
01[14:13] I was about to say, or Southern.
[14:13] (in Azumanga Daioh, at least)
[14:14] Jeez, imagine an Azumanga Daioh crossover with this
[14:14] I’m pretty sure if Tomo and Mako met, the universe would explode.
[14:14] He thinks it’s reverse psychology
01[14:14] Mako is basically a less likeable version of Tomo.
[14:15] Who can catch money bullets.
01[14:15] I am pretty sure Tomo could catch money bullets if she had the opportunity.
[14:15] And Sakaki and Satsuki
[14:15] I wouldn’t be surprised.
[14:15] What’s this symbolism for?
[14:15] A steak tank?
[14:15] Kobe beef.
01[14:15] Wait, is that guy from the American School wearing football armor MADE OF STEAK?
[14:15] Ahhhhhhh
01[14:16] That is the most perfect encapsulation of America I have ever seen.
[14:16] I dream of trying kobe beef someday
01[14:16] It is gooooooooooooood, Sylocat.
[14:16] Oh, I just realized: Meat shields.
[14:16] So, they’re cooking the steaks
[14:16] Ah, of course, meat shields
01[14:16] …while Gomogori is hiding behind the rules…
[14:17] Ryuko to the rescue!
01[14:17] Ow, that looks painful.
[14:17] Ooh, she literally ran over his face
[14:17] Yay, more Nonoi
01[14:17] Yay, back to Nonoi, the real hero.
01[14:18] Wow, so we might get the mid-series mecha refit as soon as next episode.
[14:18] Ryuko had the decency to not trample Nonoi in the face
[14:18] Business before pleasure, after all.
[14:18] Dafuq
[14:19] Mercenaries.
[14:19] Ooh, citizen soldiers, like in the old days
[14:19] The “I Heart Osaka” brigade?
[14:19] I certainly heart Osaka(-chan), but yeesh
01[14:20] Man, you’re getting schooled blindfold guy, needed your boss to step in on your behalf.
[14:20] Is Mako going to be used as a projecti… no, no she’s not. Dang it
[14:21] Fetch 100 Kamui Scraps and you can craft a new equipment!
01[14:22] Good thing they’re a Common drop from the One-Star enemies.
[14:22] For this level only, though
01[14:22] But of course the fetch quest needs a boss fight.
[14:22] Ooh, the boss fight is another match with Satsuki?
[14:22] Let’s see how she’s leveled up in the meantime
01[14:23] All right, pretty good.
01[14:23] That hit roughly the correct balance between action adn silliness IMO.
[14:24] I do like their visualizations of attacks
01[14:24] Huh, never thoguht about the significance of Ryuko looking at the wedding dress in the ending credits.
01[14:24] But that’s a kind of uniform too, isn’t it?
01[14:24] Okay, Sailor Moon at 3, yes?
[14:25] Reminder: In the flashback of episode 3, Satsuki’s father called Junketsu a wedding dress
[14:25] That’s the plan. See you all then.
01[14:25] Oh yeah.
01[14:25] Any quick final Kill la Kill thoughts before a go AFK for half an hour.
01[14:25] *I go
[14:25] Ah yes… I’m curious how wedding dresses work in this universe
[14:26] Same as ours, unless they have MacGuffins sewn in.
[14:26] In one of their brief meetings, Ragyo also referred to it as Satsuki’s wedding dress – Junketsu is a name Satsuki came up with in ep 3 and Ragyo might not even know about it at that point
01[14:26] Kill Bill’s The Bride would be rather more literal in this universe, I suspect.
[14:26] Kill la Bill?
01[14:27] lol, I am 99% certain that exists in fanart form somewhere.
[14:27] That… is eerily appropriate
[14:27] The track suits they’re wearing now are roughly consistent with her yellow outfit, aren’t they?
[14:27] And if not, it should
01[14:27] Broadly, yeah.
