Escaflowne

[14:05] These awesome credits
[14:06] All right, when we left off, they had just rescued Van from his brother on the floating fortress…
[14:06] (oh, right, they do a recap)
01[14:06] Yep.
[14:07] The capital is called “Palas”
[14:07] “Hate you?” He was gushing over your abilities in the previous episode
[14:07] Well that reading did involve things he didn’t want to hear
01[14:08] This has been your daily dose of sexual harrassment.
[14:08] Wait, who did that? I missed it
01[14:08] Allen. To Hitomi. Just now.
[14:09] Yeesh
[14:09] Van, angsting
[14:09] (granted, he has actual reasons for it)
[14:09] Sorry, right now mine won’t play for more than a few secs at a time. I shoulda run it through ahead of time.
[14:09] Dang… next time, you should just play the VHS
[14:09] Yeah, learning that your older brother is guilty of actual for serious treason is something to be sad about
[14:10] Ah, and now the one character in the credits we hadn’t met yet shows up
01[14:10] “The seas smells the same everywhere you go. Except the dung planet. We don’t talk about the dung planet.”
[14:10] And she’s a Princess, because of course she is
01[14:10] Wait, doesn’t she have green hair in the opening?
[14:11] That was a trick of the light, I think
[14:11] There were all those long shadows in the opening
[14:11] Oops, she mentions his brother
[14:11] So Hitomi and Van both don’t like her
01[14:12] “Such a nice person. Like someone who would never join the evil empire. Nope, just a really nice, good person. How is he doing?”
01[14:12] That is a really weird horse.
01[14:12] Did it have cloven hooves? It looked like it.
[14:12] Oh, Merle
[14:12] MERLE!
01[14:13] She assumed Hitomi’s school uniform is some kind of fetish outfit, that’s hilarious.
[14:13] A little meta-commentary on anime tropes
[14:13] That’s a weird hat for a king
[14:14] Oh boy… he’s here
01[14:14] Pretty sure I’ve seen a painting of Henry VIII with a hat like that.
[14:14] So, Folken goes through legal channels AFTER using brute force
01[14:15] Or possibly every painting of Henry VIII, yeesh. https://www.google.com/search?q=henry+viii&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=oj-oVOzXMIafggTCo4DYCA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=634
[14:15] Millerna… yeesh
[14:15] “stinky commoners”
[14:15] Whoa
01[14:16] Yes, Hitomi. Yes, Merle is trying to pick a fight.
01[14:16] Also, wow, she looks cute like that!
[14:16] Yeah, that’s a really good dress
[14:16] Millerna always knows the right thing to say (not).
01[14:16] Millerna is giving me evil vibes.
01[14:17] Then again, so did Allen.
[14:17] Musketeers!
[14:17] He still does from time to time
01[14:18] Why do misketeers in movies and shows never, you know, carry MUSKETS?
[14:18] Yeah, it’s always rapiers
[14:18] Well, they weren’t called musketeers just now
01[14:18] Da fuq, there are DOLPHIN PEOPLE in this world?
[14:19] Ohhhh yeah
[14:19] Not just cat-girls
[14:19] And dog-people, as you can see now
[14:19] The OTHER mere oblivion quit, I’m still here. (Long story.)
[14:19] Ah yes, I’d forgot about the CD
[14:19] Yeah, Van, heading towards the guys who you are running from is a good strategy
01[14:19] What.
[14:19] Well, it’s Folken
[14:20] My guess is that her mom brought that cd here
01[14:20] No, I mean. What. CD!?
01[14:20] Her mom?
[14:20] Her mom was seen breifly in an earlier episode
01[14:20] Oh, right, there’s a family connection to this world! The pendant!
01[14:20] I’d forgotten abaout htat.
[14:21] How can you not see that floating fortress from the marketplace?
[14:21] But oh well
[14:21] And now Folken is trying to talk to him
01[14:21] Wait, but if this show is presumably set in the 90s, Earth time, that means her mom went to this world *during Hitomi’s lifetime*.
01[14:21] *winces*
01[14:21] Dilandau is going to get SO infected, ew.
[14:22] Oh, he’s not being metaphorical? He LITERALLY died fighting the dragon, I’d forgotten that
01[14:22] *Is* he being literal? I don’t see any reason to think so.
[14:23] And now Folken’s trying to talk to him. Isn’t he going in reverse order? Negotiation first, then legal channels, then violence
[14:24] “Fighting to end fighting.” What a brilliant plan
[14:24] “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”
01[14:24] Nah, Van is pretty clearly a shonen character, and shonen rules say you can only have serious conversations *during* or *after* mortal combat.
[14:24] Was that a purposeful translation?
[14:25] Wow, those guymelef extendable claws have serious range
[14:25] They just, y’know, overload if you do that
01[14:25] Though that was apparently too much.
[14:25] So, Dilandau finally noticed Hitomi… that can’t be good
01[14:25] Oh NEAT, it must be taking the material to form the claw from the rest of the mech, and so making the claw too long caused the mech to just… dissolve.
01[14:25] That’s a cool concept.
[14:26] Back to HIs Corrupt Majesty
[14:27] Yeah, Millerna, I totally buy that
01[14:27] Hmm, guess this is the local equivalent to “welcome to my country brave night, let us have a jousting tournament in yoru honor”
[14:27] You don’t need psychic powers to determine that there’s something wrong here
01[14:28] Except it’s going all Westeros-shaped
[14:29] And there’s the cliffhanger
01[14:30] It’s a good trap. If Van kills them he’s being dishonorable and a bad guest, and the King has an excuse to kill him and take his mech, but if he doesn’t they’ll “accidentally” kill him.
[14:31] Yep… though it’s still a bit shortsighted, since Zaibach wants Van alive
01[14:31] True. Maim him, take Escaflowne and give Van to Zaibach?
[14:31] Considering it from Folken’s perspective, if a Dragon took his arm off and the next thing he knew he was in Zaibach’s care, if they tell him he was literally dead he’d just have to take their word for it
[14:31] Ah, good point
01[14:32] Good point Arrlaari.
[14:32] I think they’re banking on him chosing to kill one of the combatants
[14:32] that’s why they are sending “criminals” instead of knights
01[14:32] Which, given what we’ve seen of Van’s temperament, isn’t a bad bet.
[14:32] Once he does that they have cause to surrender him and Escaflowne to Zaibach
[14:33] Sorry to be so out of it today. Next week I’ll get set up in time.
[14:33] Yeah… Van’s clearly always been SOMEWHAT of a shounen hero in terms of temperament, but now that he watched his home country get burned by his treacherous brother, he’s going to be extra cranky
[14:33] Dad, maybe next week you can just watch it on VHS?
[14:34] Excellent plan, aka capital notion.
[14:34] The mech failure when Dilandau overcharged for the sniper attack looked like an overheat. The machine literally melted and Dilandau only survived because the emergency water tanks cooled him
01[14:34] That makes sense.
[14:34] I’m not sure they ever go into that much detail on how the Crima Claws “work.”
[14:35] They had a technobabble name for the red gems in the shoulders, they appear to be the power supply
[14:35] But yeah, that’s what it looked like
[14:35] When Dilandau melted his mech they glowed and the meltdown spread from where they were
[14:35] The “Energists” are those dragon-heart things, I think
[14:36] Well, Escaflowne’s energist involved a dragon’s heart
[14:36] That’s true, we don’t know that they’re all powered the same way
[14:36] One who is without spoilers assumes that they aren’t all powered by dragon bits
[14:36] And the one of us who is with spoilers can’t quite remember
[14:37] Although, did Van call it an energist when he pulled it from the Dragon’s corpse?

[14:39] I opened episode 1 and he calls the dragon’s magic rock an energist
[14:40] Ah… well, that answers that… although maybe various guymelefs are powered different ways? Maybe it’s only Dilandau’s squad and Escaflowne who use dragon bits
[14:40] (again, I can’t remember)
[14:43] But, we’ll see

SMC

[14:46] I love the Toei logo
[14:47] Ah yes, when we left off, she had gone all Romeo and Juliet on her brainwashed lover
01[14:47] Oh right, last episode Usagi was TOTALLY METAL for about 30 seconds, and then ruined it.
01[14:47] He’s not worth it, honey.
[14:47] Of course she’s going to Get Better, but still…
[14:47] Oh, right… they can reincarnate as many times as they want
[14:48] I believe you had decided that they were a good fit after she kissed a dude right after killing him
[14:48] I forgot that part
01[14:48] Yes, but he’s still not worth dying for.
[14:48] Maybe he’ll turn out less of a jerk next time?
01[14:48] *cue cheery upbeat music*
[14:48] Madoka had upbeat theme music as well
[14:48] Of course, that was supposed to be a deliberate dissonance trick
01[14:49] Anyway, yeah, I know they don’t do it, but given that reincarnation is an established thing in this show, they *could* have everyone fail and die and then pick up again a generation later with their reincarnations in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
[14:49] Madoka’s theme was a jpop song, this is rock n roll
01[14:49] Good point Arrlaari!
[14:49] That’d be a pretty decent concept for an expy/AU spinoff
01[14:49] Ad.
[14:50] Act 13: Final Battle
[14:50] Does Queen Metalia finally go down now?
01[14:50] Final Battle -Reincarnation- no less.
01[14:50] So Ic ould be right!
01[14:50] Ad 2 jus started.
01[14:50] Ad 3.
01[14:51] back
01[14:51] What in my viewing habits could POSSIBLY make you think I care about American idol and chapstick, Crunchyroll?
01[14:51] *has only ever used it to watch magical girl shows*
01[14:51] …Oh.
[14:51] You could make a great sci-fi series with the premise of “The magical girls lost in their previous life and now the tyrants have ruled for a generation”
[14:51] Ah, that revivification was quick
[14:52] Wait, the crystal has turned malignant?
[14:52] Oh, it’s just made itself vulnerable to her
01[14:52] Substitute “super robots” for “magical girls” (which is pretty much always a substitution you can make without changing anything else) and you have the plot of Gurren Lagann, Sylocat.
[14:52] Uh, Luna? Not a good idea
[14:52] Attack on Titan as well, to some extent
[14:53] Is Luna getting attacked going to be her berserk button again?
[14:53] “Protect them?” Metalia just demonstrated she can control the thing
[14:54] Does Luna think she’s about to have a tearjerker death scene?
01[14:54] And then the kitties teleported to the moon, because everyone who isn’t Fedora Mask can teleport.
[14:54] The arctic circle should be floating ice or open sea
01[14:55] There are islands in there, aren’t there?
[14:55] So, does Metalia have a true form?
[14:55] Like, did she once have a human shape?
[14:55] That went about as well as could be expected
[14:55] We haven’t seen her drawn any other way than this
[14:56] Ah, so she’s the Ball of Evil from The Fifth Element?
[14:56] Or Homura from the end of Rebellion…
01[14:56] Dude, is she turning random people into zombies? That’s pretty hardcore.
[14:57] Luna, if it could really do that, why didn’t you just ask it to before now?
[14:58] Whoa
[14:58] Trippy flashbacks
[14:58] Of course, her motivational speeches to them focused on their looks
[14:58] (well, to two of them, at least)
01[14:58] All of them except Mina.
01[14:59] But I’m just enjoying that this is CLEARLY all of them being energized by thoughts of their One True Love.
[14:59] Also she stabbed herself right in front of y’all
[14:59] Yeah… I still want to see the lesbian Senshi orgy
[15:00] (I hope, but am not naïve enough to believe, that the Rock Knights are Dead For Real)
[15:00] AD POWAAAA
01[15:00] Wow, giving up their power to revive her? *nods* Yes, that’s a way to do it wihtout being super-cheap.
01[15:00] Ad.
01[15:00] MORE American Idol? Seriously?
[15:00] WAIT UP
[15:01] At least it’s not three ads in a row for Crunchyroll’s premium service
[15:01] I assume that’s what I would be seeing if it weren’t somehow broken
01[15:02] back
[15:02] This week they found the ad segue, that’s nice
[15:02] Whoa, it didn’t work?
[15:02] Or is that what gets through to her?
[15:02] Ah, of course it is
01[15:03] See, Usagi, the other scouts! That’s what a person who actually values yuo looks like!
01[15:03] Haaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
[15:03] The WATCH caught the sword? How did it go so far into… what the…
01[15:03] The watch? Seriously?
[15:03] That’s just cheating
[15:03] ooh, creepy
[15:04] Now she’s talking like Kefka
01[15:04] Queen Metalia wants Usagi inside her.
01[15:04] But then again, so does everyone in this show.
[15:05] AHAHAH… “My body is getting hot.” That subtext
[15:05] Yeah, it’s not gonna be that easy
[15:06] “Usako?” Is that like some corrupted form of “Usa-chan?”
01[15:06] No, it’s the false name she gave him back when.
[15:06] Ah… right
[15:07] Because you need the other four to help you, genius
[15:07] Come on, where are they?
[15:07] Oh, are the cats going to come back and help too?
[15:08] Ah, their ghosts come back to help?
01[15:08] Strike her weak spot for massive damage!
[15:08] Ah, so when they help defeat her, they get their bodies back and become the scouts’ boyfriends again, amirite?
01[15:09] OH MY FUCKING GOD
01[15:09] ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME
01[15:09] THAT’S WORSE THAN THE WATCH
[15:09] I’m trying to think of something to say that could possibly make that twist funnier
[15:09] Hey, it’s that thing I was wondering if it would come up: The four knights turn into their eponymous gems when they die. I’m told he kept them on a shelf in the manga.
[15:10] Was that ever mentioned before in the anime?
01[15:10] You know, for a show where the theme song contains a line about not needing to be rescued by boys, they SURE DO GET RESCUED BY BOYS A LOT
[15:10] Well, to be fair, it was the boy who got rescued by boys, in this particular case
[15:10] Ooh, some homoerotic subtext on the male side as well!
01[15:10] Yeah, but they gave him necessary information to save her.
[15:10] I was going to say, it looks like they have symmetric implied harems
[15:11] Oh come on, wake up already, senshi
01[15:11] Yeah, I mean, the whole thing about the generals neatly lining up one-to-one to date the Sailor Scouts is CLEARLY a beard.
[15:11] Or a queer-bait
[15:11] Lavender Shipping
01[15:11] Okay.
01[15:11] So, thoguhts?
[15:11] Huh, one more episode?
01[15:12] Actually I’m pretty sure it’s a 26-episode buy.
[15:12] I’m still trying to think of any witty comment that could possibly make that “The rocks caught the sword” twist funnier than it is all on its own
[15:12] I’m not sure what they’re going to do with 12 more episodes after the next
01[15:13] Whatever the next arc of the manga is?
[15:13] If they finished Metalia this episode they’d have spilit 13-13 between first and second arcs
[15:13] I mean, if it had been something Usagi gave him that caught her sword blow, that would at least be somewhat dramatic
[15:13] but I don’t think the next arc can fit into one fewer episode
[15:14] How many arcs are there in the manga?
[15:14] Small stranger…
01[15:14] Well, I mean, *most* 26-episode anime split into a 13 episode piece and a 12-episode piece, plus a recap in the middle.
[15:14] I know who that is but I shan’t spoil it.
01[15:15] Possible they just cut the recap and had it be a 14 and a 12.
[15:15] I guess we’ll see
01[15:16] Any other thoughts?
[15:17] Not at the moment, on my part
[15:17] You two should definitely find time to watch the end of the old anime’s season 1
[15:17] not before watching next episode of crystal
[15:17] but soon after
01[15:17] kk
[15:17] I intend to… I’ve never seen the old anime subtitled, I only saw that absurd dub

Escaflowne

 [14:00] <Froborr> Here’s the opening I like.

[14:00] <Froborr> This is one of my favorite OPs ever, despite never seeing the show.
[14:00] <Froborr> I was sad it wasn’t in the first episode.
[14:00] <@Sylocat> Yeah… I love this opening
[14:00] <Froborr> It tells such a story!
[14:01] <Arrlaari> Whoah, I am getting serious encoding glitches here
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Ouch… sorry, Arrlaari
[14:01] <FoME> The giant robots do feel a bit out of place, though.
[14:01] <Froborr> I wonder if my reading of it–that it presages a story about isolated people only able to come together through violence–is true.
[14:01] <Froborr> No spoilers!
[14:01] <@Sylocat> Steampunk mecha, it was really innovative for the time
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Okay, the encoding glitches are persisting into the episode itself, I gotta switch back to the site linked at the top
[14:02] <@Sylocat> (the Ace of Serpents was a bit more on-the-nose than most of the tarot cards they use for an opening)
[14:02] <FoME> I’m not complaining. It’s just sticks out a bit.
[14:02] <Froborr> Most people would mention the dragon first, or possibly the teleportation to another world, but Hitomi is still focused on how the universe is cockblocking her.
[14:02] <Arrlaari> Wait, the link  at the top changed
[14:02] <Arrlaari> what was it before?
[14:02] <Froborr> In what POSSIBLE universe does Hitomi’s mother BELIEVE them?
[14:02] <Froborr> That’s just… what?
[14:02] <Arrlaari> I had to stop the video
[14:03] <@Sylocat> The original link was http://www.anime4fun.com/vision-of-escaflowne-episode-2
[14:03] <@Sylocat> Ah, this brings back SO many memories
[14:03] <Froborr> I am stopped at the line “There is a legendf among the wolf people”
[14:04] <Froborr> let’s let Arrlarri catch up
[14:04] <Arrlaari> No glitches but the video skipped the OP
[14:04] <@Sylocat> Oh, we’re pausing? Where are we paused at?
[14:04] <Froborr> Let me know when you get to that line, Arrlaari
[14:04] <Froborr> “There is a legend among the wolf peopel”
[14:04] <Froborr> I have lost all ability to spell
[14:04] <FoME> Can you give a time, Froborr?
[14:05] <Arrlaari> I’m now paused at that line
[14:05] <Froborr> 03:16.
[14:05] <Froborr> Let me know when you’re there and we’ll resume.
[14:05] <FoME> I’m good.
[14:05] <mere_oblivion> I’m at 5:15, no glitches here; guess I better pause.
[14:05] <@Sylocat> Sorry about this, mere_oblivion
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> no problemo
[14:06] <@Sylocat> I can’t find “there’s a legend among the wolf people,” 3:16 for me is “That’s Fanelia, little lady”
[14:06] <FoME> Likewise.
[14:06] <mere_oblivion> likewise X 2
[14:07] <Froborr> I haven’t even reached that line yet?
[14:07] <Froborr> Okay, just did.
[14:07] <Froborr> It’s 4:45 for me.
[14:07] <Froborr> …which is the length of the OP difference.
[14:07] <Froborr> Okay, all resume from that line?
[14:07] <Arrlaari> On my video the line is at 1:40
[14:07] <Froborr> ….
[14:07] <Arrlaari> Adobe flash crashed
[14:08] <@Sylocat> That’s still not… what the heck?
[14:08] <Froborr> Okay.
[14:08] <Froborr> I’m calling this.
[14:08] <Arrlaari> Oh, but that was some other flash thing, the actual video is fine
[14:08] <@Sylocat> Can we just start over from the end of the opening credits?
[14:08] <Froborr> Yeah, okay.
[14:08] <mere_oblivion> fine by me
[14:08] <FoME> Are you sure you have the right episode, Froborr?
[14:08] <Arrlaari> I found that line fine
[14:09] <FoME> Never mind then.
[14:09] <Arrlaari> It’s near the beginning, when the people on the Other World are in the wolf people’s caravan
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Okay, let me know when you’re back at the end of the credits…
[14:09] <Arrlaari> or wagon or whatever
[14:09] <FoME> I’m just after the opening.
[14:09] <Arrlaari> End of the credits is beginning of video for me, I’m there
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Okay?
[14:09] <@Sylocat> Ready?
[14:09] <mere_oblivion> I’m back at 1:34 (end of creds)
[14:09] <Froborr> Yep.
[14:09] <Froborr> Ready.
[14:10] <@Sylocat> 3…2…1…
[14:10] <@Sylocat> Click
[14:10] <@Sylocat> “Was it all just a dream, or a vision?
[14:10] <@Sylocat> (and as Froborr mentioned, she starts out with the boy she has a crush on)
[14:10] <Arrlaari> They’re surrounded … by friends!
[14:10] <@Sylocat> But at least she doesn’t spend the entire series moping over it
[14:11] <FoME> Preferable to the alternative.
[14:11] <Arrlaari> Hitomi’s mom must have heard some shit from grandma.
[14:11] <Froborr> Sylo: That would be a spoiler, now woudln’t it?
[14:11] <@Sylocat> Sorry
[14:11] <Froborr> Damn, that is one huge bison thing.
[14:12] <Arrlaari> Why can’t she see anything nice?
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Of course, these days I notice the static crowd and cel
[14:12] <@Sylocat> Aarlaari, what episode does it say you’re on?
[14:13] <@Sylocat> Ah, there he is… Balgus
[14:13] <Arrlaari> None of them seem to be entertaining the possibility that he didn’t come back because it killed him
[14:13] <@Sylocat> And we meet Merle, this show’s interpretation of the obligatory cat-girl
[14:13] <Froborr> How far ahead are you, Sylo?
[14:13] <@Sylocat> I thought we all started from the end of the opening credits
[14:14] <FoME> She’s only just getting that he’s a prince?
[14:14] <Arrlaari> It says 2
[14:14] <mere_oblivion> That surprised me, too (that she only just got it)
[14:14] <@Sylocat> This is getting weird
[14:14] <Froborr> I did.
[14:14] <Froborr> I think your copy is FASTER than mine.
[14:14] <Arrlaari> Van is showing them the rock
[14:14] <Froborr> Same here.
[14:15] <FoME> Hitomi’s having a flashback to class here.
[14:15] <mere_oblivion> I’m there in her flashback too.
[14:15] <Froborr> That hasn’t happened yet.
[14:15] <Arrlaari> Yeah you guys are running ahead of us
[14:15] <mere_oblivion> I’ll pause again?
[14:15] <FoME> …How?
[14:15] <@Sylocat> I’m only a little behind mere_oblivion and FoME
[14:15] <Arrlaari> Just seeing the mecha
[14:15] <@Sylocat> *headdesk*
[14:16] <Froborr> Yeah, me and arrlaari are synched, but significantly behidn the rest of you.
[14:16] <Arrlaari> How does she have a change of her normal clothe?
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Let us know when you get to her flashback of class
[14:16] <Froborr> That is a really good question Arrlaari.
[14:16] <Arrlaari> Flashback
[14:16] <Froborr> Yep, Flashback.
[14:16] <@Sylocat> Okay then, re-clicking
[14:17] <mere_oblivion> ‘deed
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Ass shot of the guy
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Of course
[14:17] <Froborr> Catgirl in the window!
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Oh, Merle
[14:17] <Froborr> Man, remember when catgirls were EVERYWHERE.
[14:17] <@Sylocat> Yeah, they had one in every show…
[14:17] <@Sylocat> And each one was a different design, it was like the main innovation
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Oh, THAT’S how she has a change of clothes
[14:18] <Froborr> Hmm, her pendant is the same color as the energist.
[14:18] <@Sylocat> Ooh, you do NOT mess with Hitomi’s pendant
[14:18] <Arrlaari> Well at least she acts like a cat. I still would prefer if she looked like a Charr
[14:18] <FoME> I do appreciate a catgirl that actually exhibits feline behavior.
[14:19] <Froborr> Hitomi is really turned on by athletic displays, huh.
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Well, she’s an athlete, so…
[14:19] <FoME> Yeah, this seems like a real fair match…
[14:19] <@Sylocat> Gee, I wonder if THIS weakness will come up again
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Does Merle know yet where Hitomi is from?
[14:20] <Froborr> Jeez, this samurai guy is GINORMOUS.
[14:20] <@Sylocat> I can’t remember
[14:20] <@Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:20] <@Sylocat> With the scars and only one eye
[14:20] <mere_oblivion> She calls her “a foreigner,” but nothing more specific.
[14:20] <@Sylocat> AND he’s the mentor/trainer figure
[14:20] <Froborr> Ghost mech!
[14:20] <FoME> I doubt she knows the specifics, only that Hitomi’s not from here.
[14:20] <Froborr> Or cloaked or whatever.
[14:21] <Froborr> Balgus is the giant samurai, yes?
[14:21] <FoME> Damn Romulans.
[14:21] <@Sylocat> Yep
[14:21] <Froborr> I was thinking Jem’Hadar, but yeah.
[14:22] <@Sylocat> Solid lasers!
[14:22] <Arrlaari> That looks like an unpleasant way to be assasinated
[14:22] <Froborr> “What is it?”
[14:22] <mere_oblivion> “Know any good ones?”
[14:22] <Froborr> “A hunter-destroyer–“
[14:22] <Froborr> “oooh!”
[14:22] <Froborr> “A hunter-“
[14:22] <Arrlaari> Stomping around like that somewhat mitigates the advantages of optical stealth
[14:22] <Froborr> “Ooooh!”
[14:23] <@Sylocat> These guys obviously don’t care about covering their tracks
[14:23] <Froborr> So it isn’t Romulans or Jem’Hadar, it’s Irkens.
[14:23] <@Sylocat> We have our title
[14:23] <FoME> Well, when you’re heavy enough that every footprint is a crater…
[14:23] <@Sylocat> (or part of it)
[14:24] <Froborr> Well, this isn’t going well for the presumptive good guys.
[14:24] <@Sylocat> This gets dark in a hurry
[14:24] <Arrlaari> Why are they even invisible when their weapon one shots every enemy
[14:24] <FoME> Wait, it looks more like the thing has a plus-sized invisibility cloak.
[14:24] <@Sylocat> These guys really aren’t cut out for stealth
[14:25] <Arrlaari> Did I get glitched out?
[14:25] <@Sylocat> Ooh, summoning an eidolon
[14:25] <FoME> I don’t know, did you?

[14:25] <Froborr> Anything which requires a blood pact is generally a bad idea.

[14:25] <@Sylocat> Oh, I forgot… Escaflowne hatches from an egg
[14:25] <FoME> Even when it’s in the title of the show?

[14:26] <Arrlaari> I think I got the glitch where one is disconnected and it just looks like everyone is quiet

[14:26] <@Sylocat> We did go a while without speaking, IIRC
[14:26] <Froborr> Yeah, this has “there is a dark secret to these mecha” written all over it.
[14:27] <@Sylocat> I love the steampunk piloting system
[14:27] <Froborr> That IS really cool-looking.
[14:27] <FoME> And I’m sure the exposed heart will never be a problem. But it is an awesome design.
[14:27] <Arrlaari> I dunno, it’s just powered by a dragon’s magic heart rock, that seems like a normal magical artifact kind of thing
[14:27] <@Sylocat> You know, this was my first mecha anime… I had no idea it was mostly the domain of high-tech sci-fi
[14:28] <@Sylocat> Gee, that doesn’t look phallic
[14:28] <FoME> I want a theme song that consists of a choir chanting my name.
[14:28] <Froborr> Because he can see it, it doesn’t get its accuracy bonuses and Sneak Attack damage.
[14:28] <@Sylocat> Yep, just mechas with stealth capes
[14:29] <mere_oblivion> FoME: Just hire a Carl Orff wannabe and you’re covered.
[14:29] <@Sylocat> GO BALGUS
[14:29] <FoME> So badass, he doesn’t even need a mecha.
[14:29] <Froborr> That is some serious badass.
[14:29] <@Sylocat> Yeah, Balgus is awesome
[14:30] <Froborr> Dude, he just PARRIED A MECH and then killed it.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> Whoa, Van learned fast how to be delicate with precision movements in that thing
[14:30] <Froborr> That is like Jin Uzuki or Id/Fei/Grahf-level badass.
[14:30] <@Sylocat> Dang
[14:30] <Froborr> Well, yeah, of course Balgus dies.
[14:31] <Froborr> If he lived, this would be a three-episode series.
[14:31] <@Sylocat> He has to, it’s the scene where the hero’s hometown gets burned
[14:31] <@Sylocat> I suppose he was pretty OP
[14:31] <FoME> It’s the Batman Principle. He has to win every time. They only need to win once.
[14:31] <Froborr> “Oh hey, Balgus is dead, we don’t need stealth anymore.”
[14:31] <Froborr> Clearly, they were just hiding from Balgus.
[14:32] <@Sylocat> Eeyup
[14:32] <Arrlaari> I was saying while I was glitched
[14:32] <@Sylocat> These closing credits, on the other hand, make no sense
[14:32] <Froborr> Yeah, they’re terrible.
[14:32] <@Sylocat> But oh well
[14:32] <Arrlaari> It was hard to understand why they even had stealth when they were one-shotting every opponent
[14:32] <Arrlaari> I don’t get closing credits
[14:32] <Froborr> Yeah, I saw that Arrlaari.
[14:32] <Froborr> Trust me, you’re not missing anything.
[14:33] <Froborr> And yeah, I think their stealth was just for the Sneak Attack bonuses and so they could hide from Balgus.
[14:33] <@Sylocat> The opening is great though
[14:33] <FoME> So they could keep one-shotting them without any effective retaliation, I suppose.
[14:33] <Froborr> Okay, any quick final thoguhts before I copy this up to the blog?
[14:33] <@Sylocat> The stealth cloaks aren’t even that great… they have to break cover to make any attack at all
[14:33] <@Sylocat> Aside from me and dad’s obligatory “This brings back memories?”
[14:33] <Arrlaari> But “hiding from Balgus” totally explains it
[14:34] <FoME> Balgus clearly had favored enemy (mecha)
[14:34] <mere_oblivion> Er, “This brings back memories”? (Sorry.)

Sailor Moon Crystal

[14:39] <@Sylocat> Dream sequence?
[14:39] <FoME> Wait. If she’s on the moon, then what’s in front of the Earth?
[14:39] <Arrlaari> An Ominous Black Sphere
[14:39] <@Sylocat> Ooh, maybe she’s on Gaea with Hitomi?
[14:39] <@Sylocat> Well, it was a dream sequence
[14:39] <Froborr> Nope, he’s dead. That’s the end.
[14:39] <@Sylocat> We should be so lucky
[14:40] <@Sylocat> Every episode I keep thinking that it sounds like TENMON did the music
[14:40] <@Sylocat> (well, not the opening, that sounds like whoever did the KLK themes)
[14:40] <Arrlaari> I forget if I’ve mentioned before, but it’s REVO, a group that did the Shingeki OPs and all the music for Bravely Default
[14:41] <@Sylocat> Ah… I haven’t seen those
[14:41] <@Sylocat> Are they good?
[14:41] <Arrlaari> Well, I like what I’ve heard of them
[14:41] <Arrlaari> i.e. this, Shingeki OPs, and Bravely Default music
[14:41] <FoME> Ad after the opening.
[14:42] <@Sylocat> As usual
[14:42] <FoME> I’m back.
[14:43] <@Sylocat> Wait, is it called “Reunion” or “Endymion” (Endouchemion)
[14:43] <@Sylocat> Hahah… I love that they have a command center
[14:43] <FoME> I believe “Endymion” is the subtitle.
[14:44] <@Sylocat> Ah, and here he’s in his brainwashed mode
[14:44] <@Sylocat> Whoa… it’s not even subtext anymore, it’s just text
[14:44] <Froborr> BrainwasheD or brainwasheR?
[14:44] <@Sylocat> Both
[14:44] <FoME> Yes.
[14:45] <@Sylocat> “You have red irises! You must be from Ishval!”
[14:45] <FoME> Oh, hey, it’s Motoki’s fiancee. At least, she was in the original anime.
[14:45] <Arrlaari> The book just happens to have the rocks they are named after on the cover
[14:46] <@Sylocat> I thought talking loud was SOP in anime
[14:46] <@Sylocat> Ahahah… suspicious, carrying a giant broadsword around
[14:46] <FoME> Maybe just a little.
[14:46] <Arrlaari> That’s not how diamond hardness works
[14:46] <@Sylocat> Just say you’re cosplaying, you look exactly like a gazillion other anime characters
[14:47] <Arrlaari> If it’s poisonous why are they handling it with their bare hands
[14:47] <@Sylocat> “Poisonous?” Diamonds can be poisoned?
[14:47] <FoME> “What, doesn’t everyone have spare diamond rings on hand?”
[14:47] <Arrlaari> It’s the sword and the rock from the palace that are poisoned
[14:47] <@Sylocat> It must be some different kind of poison
[14:47] <Froborr> Usagi should’ve had drawings all over her face when she woke up.
[14:48] <Arrlaari> I guess it’s poison if ingested? That’s what happened to Cave Johnson
[14:48] <Froborr> IIRC it was because he breathed it, not ingested it.
[14:48] <FoME> Usagi’s red string of fate seems to be a bungee cord.
[14:48] <Froborr> Whcih IIIRC is actually the danger with moondust.
[14:48] <FoME> Ad.
[14:49] <@Sylocat> Hey, Crunchyroll put the ads in the right place
[14:49] <FoME> Shocking, isn’t it?
[14:49] <@Sylocat> I think moondust is dangerous because it’s got sharp edges, like crushed glass
[14:49] <@Sylocat> I think I read that on Cracked
[14:49] <FoME> I’m back
[14:50] <FoME> And I wouldn’t want to breathe in crushed glass.
[14:50] <Froborr> Makes sense, given lack of erosive forces on the Moon.
[14:50] <@Sylocat> So he IS in university
[14:50] <Arrlaari> Yeah, they’re also magnetic so any kind of electronics will get covered with them
[14:50] <@Sylocat> Ooh, Luna has a cell phone
[14:51] <@Sylocat> Well duh
[14:51] <@Sylocat> They should tell her to get away from him even when he’s “normal”
[14:51] <Froborr> Oh yes, tell the adolescent girl to stay away from the dangerous older boy, that always works.
[14:51] <@Sylocat> Worse, now he’s a “Bad Boy.”
[14:51] <@Sylocat> A Bad Boy who needs rescuing from his own dark demons
[14:52] <@Sylocat> Yep, he hasn’t changed all that much
[14:52] <FoME> I’d say he’s even more of a creep.
[14:52] <@Sylocat> “Usako?”
[14:53] <Froborr> Hard to believe it’s possible, but yes, I’d say he’s more of a creep.
[14:53] <@Sylocat> These subtitles are very… literal
[14:53] <Froborr> IIRC “Usako” is the false name she gave him that one time.
[14:53] <Arrlaari> It’s the pet name he started using shortly before being captured
[14:53] <FoME> His pet name for her.
[14:53] <@Sylocat> Ooh, smouldering gazes into each other’s eyes
[14:54] <FoME> Wow. And Mamoru didn’t bother to hypnotize more than two people for his cover story.
[14:54] <Froborr> Well, they’re translating EXTREMELY rapidly, being ultra-literal makes snese.
[14:54] <@Sylocat> True…
[14:55] <@Sylocat> “Stay away from Mamoru Chiba.” Good advice in pretty much all situations, but of course she’s not going to listen
[14:55] <FoME> Darn it, why did they send the brawler to confront him? They always have crap Will saves.
[14:55] <@Sylocat> What, he’s there already?
[14:55] <Froborr> Wait, seriously?
[14:55] <Froborr> Arcade dude is going to be a minion now?
[14:55] <Arrlaari> Is this the first time Venus has done a fully transform animation?
[14:55] <@Sylocat> A Sailor Scout fell for a Suggestion Spell?
[14:55] <FoME> I believe so.
[14:55] <@Sylocat> Ooh, nice ribbon effect
[14:55] <Arrlaari> Different pen styles
[14:56] <@Sylocat> (shades of Mami, which is probably intentional)
[14:56] <FoME> The funny thing is that those two already were friends in the originial anime.
[14:56] <FoME> Also, it seems this episode needs to fill a lot of time.
[14:57] <@Sylocat> Yes… I love the transformation sequences, but can’t they do a joint one?
[14:57] <Froborr> Yeah, this is draaaaaagging.
[14:57] <@Sylocat> Don’t tell me the entire rest of the episode is going to be their transformation and catchphrases leading up to the battle… that’d be worse than Dragon Ball Z
[14:57] <FoME> Wow. And pre-battle taunts. Sheesh.
[14:57] <Arrlaari> Given the overall pacing of the show it feels like they finally found space to show off all the work they put into the transforms
[14:57] <Froborr> Magica Quintent this ain’t.
[14:58] <@Sylocat> Oh for goodness’s sake
[14:58] <@Sylocat> Usagi, DO SOMETHING
[14:58] <FoME> Oh, now he has magic.
[14:58] <Froborr> But I bet he’s still a non-teleporting loser.
[14:58] <FoME> Well, I suppose the mind control indicated that.
[14:59] <@Sylocat> Please tell me Usagi’s finally going to work up the nerve to slap him out of it
[14:59] <Froborr> BECAUSE HE’S EVIL, USAGI.
[14:59] <@Sylocat> (this is one of the VERY few occasions in which I would actually recommend “Knocking some sense into” someone)
[14:59] <Froborr> Oh ffs just murder him already.
[15:00] <@Sylocat> Oh, he did NOT just hurt the kitty
[15:00] <@Sylocat> Well, FINALLY
[15:00] <Froborr> Okay, I like that him hurting Luna was the last straw.
[15:00] <FoME> You can kick her friends’ asses as much as you want, but hurt her cat and you will pay.
[15:00] <Froborr> Of course, now there’s just enough time for her trasnformation sequence and then the cliffhanger.
[15:00] <@Sylocat> It’s a kids’ show… of course the cat is sacred
[15:00] <Arrlaari> It does play into a trope I see, where women refuse to fight until someone they care about is hurt right in front of her
[15:01] <FoME> Of course, that implies she doesn’t care about any of the other Senshi.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Hey, Usagi? While you’re at it, get Jupiter to snap out of it too
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Oh… she’s actually doing that?
[15:01] <Froborr> Once again, Mercury is the smart one.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> That’s…nice
[15:01] <@Sylocat> She’s actually doing something sensible
[15:01] <FoME> Hell of an entrance.
[15:01] <@Sylocat> Oh crud
[15:01] <Froborr> no sell
[15:02] <@Sylocat> I didn’t see that one coming
[15:02] <@Sylocat> WHAT?
[15:03] <@Sylocat> “Are you Mamo-chan?”
[15:03] <@Sylocat> Are you kidding me?
[15:03] <Froborr> *facepalm*
[15:03] <FoME> Sadly, no.
[15:03] <Arrlaari> They just got done convincing her that he’s a constructed impostor
[15:03] <@Sylocat> For the love of…
[15:03] <Froborr> Okay, quick final thoughts before I copy this up and head out?
[15:03] <@Sylocat> This is worse than the four Rock Knights being the Sailor Scouts’ boyfriends
[15:04] <@Sylocat> This is turning into Twilight
[15:04] <Froborr> Yeah.
[15:04] <Froborr> “Boys are all evil, but with your love you can change them!” That’s… healthy.
[15:05] <@Sylocat> Okay, deep breath, the preview almost looks decent
[15:05] <Froborr> I skipped it.
[15:05] <FoME> I swear the earlier anime isn’t this bad.

[15:05] <@Sylocat> I was actually preferring this one for a while, since Tuxedo Fedora doesn’t have to swoop in every episode to save her

[15:06] <Froborr> I still find it difficult to believe anything can run that many episodes and be any good.
[15:06] <FoME> Eh, she saves herself. His greatest power is inspirational speeches.
[15:06] <Arrlaari> More like his only power
[15:06] <FoME> I won’t deny there are pacing problems, but it at least gives the story room to breathe.
[15:07] <Froborr> Anyway, sorry to cut this short, but I’ve gotta run.
[15:07] <@Sylocat> I should watch the original anime with subtitles instead of dubbed… maybe it’ll be better?
[15:07] <Arrlaari> The older Sailor Moon Anime actually got better in the later seasons

01[15:02] Now then.
[15:02] I still say that logo looks like Speedy Gonzales
01[15:02] TO THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
[15:02] Probably by teleporting, you guys
01[15:02] Are they actually going to animate the gravity difference?
[15:02] Ah yes, when we left off, they were about to launch a rescue mission for Tuxedo Fedora by going to the moon
01[15:02] That’d be pretty sweet.
[15:02] that’s a thing y’all can do
[15:03] That’s a waning crescent.
[15:03] I was about to say, “At least she’s going for herself, and not for the jerk,” but then of course she thinks about him
01[15:03] I can never remember which way the shadow goes on the moon.
[15:03] Right to left.
01[15:04] Good to know.
[15:04] Wouldn’t it be like “West to east” or vice-versa?
01[15:04] Nope.
01[15:05] Huh, no ad at end of credits.
01[15:05] Wait.
01[15:05] Usagi has a father!?
[15:05] That’s weird
01[15:05] I assumed her mome just reproduced parthenogenically, like most anime parents!
[15:05] Yeah, we saw him in the episode where Tuxedo Mask kissed Usagi while she was asleep.
[15:06] Ah yes, we were distracted by Tuxedo Mask’s jerkitude
01[15:06] I missed it, what did she say that freaked out her parents?
[15:06] I missed it too
[15:06] He asked if the crystal was from a boyfriend and she replied “something like that”
01[15:06] Wait, they waited like two weeks!?
[15:06] That’s… a weird thing to freak parents out
01[15:07] Well, she’s a bit on the yougn side for it, isn’t she?
[15:07] In the original anime her dad freaked out a whole lot more
[15:07] Ah, he wasn’t expecting her to say yes
[15:07] Ooh, nice teleport ring
[15:07] Standing in a fountain, nice aesthetic
[15:07] And so Luna banishes them to the Moon.
01[15:08] Yep.
01[15:08] Somebody HAS to have made that mashup by now, right?
[15:08] Huh. You’d think.
01[15:08] Hmm.
[15:08] I’ve seen plenty of fanart with the two of them.
[15:08] “There’s no sound here” she says with her voice
01[15:08] Did they go to the Sea of Serenity in the original manga, or was that a reference to the English dub?
[15:08] ad
[15:09] There’s the ad.
[15:09] So, “Silver Millennium” is the name of the place?
[15:09] “Princess Serenity” is the original name
[15:09] Apparently. I always figured it was reference to the time period.
[15:09] So it’s probably a reference to that
01[15:09] Ah.
[15:10] I’m back.
01[15:10] Arrlaari, back?
[15:10] I’m back
[15:10] “Moon Castle.” Wow. Really?
[15:11] Wait, a King Arthur reference?
[15:11] Really?
[15:11] Except everyone except the queen has to pull it out, apparently.
[15:11] Oh, they get it out without her?
01[15:11] Best Sword in the Stone riff ever remains Shadow Hearts: From the New World.
[15:12] Wow… this is freaky
01[15:12] Wow, her mom was short.
[15:12] One of the Silver Millennium VIs survived the Reapers.
01[15:12] Kitty Cans!
01[15:13] Also: I guess this is the final nail in my “the moon people were hideous blob monsters” theory.
01[15:13] Ah well.
[15:13] Alas. I like that theory.
[15:13] Great, her forbidden love for Endouchemion made sure she could save the world in her next life
[15:13] Whoa, it’s the bad guy from The Fifth Element
01[15:14] Huh. Are they implying they weren’t native to the Moon, but *sent* there from elsewhere? Interesting.
01[15:14] Certainly makes more sense.
[15:14] “Keep his sanity?”
[15:15] So, do they rebuild the Moon Palace at any point in the manga?
[15:15] The parts that weren’t already turned to stone, anyway.
01[15:15] Please don’t answer that question.
[15:15] Asking for spoilers, can’t giv e’em
[15:15] Ooh, it’s like Hyrule in Wind Waker
[15:15] (ah yeah, I forgot not to ask for spoilers… sorry)
[15:15] “Help me Usa-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.”
[15:16] Great… “girls crying saves the world,” again
[15:16] I suppose it’s better than “girls crying endangers the world,”
[15:16] Again, this sounds like music from Makoto Shinkai movies
[15:17] A couple thousand years in low power mode chewed through the batteries.
01[15:17] LIGHT IS NOT A SOUND
[15:17] Ad.
[15:17] ad
01[15:17] Also: you can’t hear ANY sounds on the moon, because there is NO AIR
01[15:18] *implodes*
[15:18] Well, presumably they breathe with magic
[15:18] Barring magic dialogue powers.
01[15:18] No, I had no problem with them talking in the previous scene, there’s a bazillion explanations.
[15:18] Back.
01[15:18] My problem is with the silly line after.
[15:19] ad over
[15:19] Why didn’t they put the ad between the two commercial-break tags?
[15:19] And there’s a transition clearly meant for ads
[15:19] shortly after the ad
[15:19] Oh, Crunchyroll…
01[15:20] I am pretty sure Crunchyroll’s ad placement is automated by a system that isn’t very smart.
01[15:20] Especially since two people can get different ads for the same episode, as we’ve seen before.
[15:20] “Queen Metalia?” That’s the villain name?
[15:20] Yup.
[15:20] We have an evil queen working for another evil queen.
[15:21] I wrote a bad fanfic fifteen years ago with a villain name like that
[15:21] Ah, they have been hinting at this a while. They never covered it in the older anime
[15:21] Wait, these four were good guys in their last lives?
01[15:21] Oho, plot twist, the generals served Tuxedo Fedora.
[15:21] Huh. The old anime didn’t have that
[15:21] It’s one of the most frequently mentioned changes
01[15:22] Odd choice storywise, having them remember only to immediately be mind-controlled.
[15:23] Wait, they’re locating the bad guys’ hideout with plate tectonics?
[15:23] And the waste heat from their hideout.
[15:23] Ooh, it’s like a much better version of “State of Fear”
[15:23] Ooh, a tennis boss fight!
[15:24] Dang, they only reflected one projectile
[15:24] Sailor V remembers them?
[15:24] Oh jeez, don’t tell me they were coupled together
[15:24] Oh, for crying out loud.
[15:24] For the love of…
01[15:25] Oh FFS
[15:25] Love apparently trumps survival instincts.
[15:25] I no longer find their being brainwashed good guys to be an interesting plot twist
[15:25] Wait, Bella Swan snaps them out of it?
[15:25] Hey, here’s an idea: Each scout goes after one of the guys who WASN’T her boyfriend
01[15:26] Man, that is a POTEN status-cure spell she has.
[15:26] ad
[15:26] Ad.
[15:26] That is easily the worst ad placement I’ve seen on crunchyroll
[15:26] Usagi apparently has the Elements of Harmony lodged in her wand.
01[15:27] Well, I mean, the elements of harmony are PRETTY OBVIOUSLY based on exactly the kind of magical girl team Sailor Moon epitomizes.
[15:27] ad over
[15:27] Ad done.
[15:27] Yeah, except the Elements are actually AIDED with the powers of love and self-respect, rather than hindered by them
01[15:28] I’m still annoyed that it lined up as neatly as Sailor Moon + 4 Senshi hook up with Endymion + 4 Generals.
01[15:29] Ah, and of course now we get the Evil Brainwashed Boyfriend maneuver.
01[15:29] Ehhh.
[15:29] Mamoru is kind of the archetypical Evil Brainwashed Boyfriend
01[15:29] The last couple of episodes have been… not great.
[15:30] At least they found time for a fight after exposition today
[15:30] I dare to hope that the brainwashed boyfriend arc will have a better moral than, “Your love will snap him out of it.”
[15:30] (don’t confirm or deny that)
[15:30] This whole setup was based on an idea Naoko Takeuchi had after she could employ it in the original manga.
01[15:30] I suspect that is exactly what will happen, alas. I guess it’s slightly better than “a sharp knock on the head cures all brainwashing.”
[15:31] Yeah… I mean, the four generals counterparting the scouts COULD HAVE been a reasonably interesting idea, but then it led to them nearly getting killed over it
[15:32] (I mean, even if it had been played well, there would still have been loads of better ways to go about finding them boyfriends, but still)
[15:33] Due to the overall pace, brainwashed Mamoru was hanging around for quite a few episodes in the older show. The way it played was pretty funny but I’l refrain from describing it for now.
01[15:33] I’m annoyed because it goes against my Usagi/Everything With a Pulse ship.
[15:33] Yeah… I wanted a lesbian orgy, for many reasons a couple of which were actually wholesome
[15:33] Even the cats, Froborr?
[15:33] That ship’s supported much more in the original anime.
[15:34] Yeah, by this point three of the four generals were dead and Zoicite had been in love in Kunzite (the dub made Zoicite a girl, which was not much of a stretch because he had been played as a hyper femme stereotype)
[15:35] Oh, the dub. “Darien? Who is that? I am Prince Darien!”
01[15:35] …
01[15:35] I can’t decide if that line is terrible or brilliant. Likely both.
[15:35] IIRC, Zoisite and Kunzite were also a couple in the Japanese version… it was one of the original Yaoi things
[15:35] Or the Legend of Brad
[15:36] The Legend of Brad: Princess Twilight
[15:37] Oh, THAT Brad
[15:37] I was wondering who you meant
01[15:37] ???
[15:37] It’ll be far too long until we can really talk about Brad in Froborr’s presence
01[15:38] So confused.
[15:38] “Brad” was the nickname the fans gave Flash Sentry before we knew his name
01[15:38] Oh.
[15:38] It concerns characters introduced in the third season of the old show
[15:38] Sylocat we are talking about a different Brad than that
[15:38] Oh… sorry
[15:39] I actually don’t know about Flash Sentry
[15:39] When you said “Princess Twilight,” I thought… yeah
[15:39] No, that’s the one I had in mind.
[15:39] Forgot about any Brads in a Sailor Moon context.
[15:39] The idea of Brad only occurs in the english dub
[15:39] That’s all I can say
[15:40] Oh. OH! Right. That. Yeah, can’t say anything more there.
01[15:40] o…k…
[15:40] That was confusing
[15:41] Yeah, that was mostly because of my free association. Sorry about that.

[14:00] Link’s voice actor voices Sanageyama, you know.
[14:00] Of course, the greatest disparity
[14:00] We came to exactly this conclusion last week
[14:00] I love the terminology they use for their dramatic statements
[14:01] Wait, who came up with the suction device?
[14:01] Was it Nonon?
[14:01] Iori
[14:01] Uh oh… Nui is even more unbalanced now
[14:01] It was his major project through the time skip
01[14:01] Well, Nui’s lost it.
[14:01] Ah yeah, I forgot
01[14:02] What little of it she had, anyway.
[14:02] I love how her expression never really changes
[14:02] Also, I believe they added a few outfits to Satsuki in the OP
01[14:03] Anyway, yeah, I’m aware liking TP more than Ocarina is a rare opinion, but *shrug* It is the opinion I have.
[14:03] e.g. I saw the nudist belts outfit just now and IIRC that doesn’t show up the first time this OP plays
[14:03] Ad after the credits, per usual.
[14:03] The outfits go by so quick it’s hard to tell
01[14:03] I’ll give an even rarer one: I like Windwaker more than OoT.
[14:03] I think there are a lot of people who undervalue refinement of the formula when it comes to evaluating Zelda games
[14:04] I found the sailing enjoyably meditative.
01[14:04] Hmm, maybe one of us should go back and check on the nudist belt thing and comment?
[14:04] That opinion isn’t quite as rare as you might think…
[14:04] Actually I suspect that Windwaker > OoT is a more common sentiment than TP > OoT
[14:04] I’m back.
01[14:04] (I did not like the sailing, but I LOVED the swordplay)
[14:04] I know I hear WW > TP a lot
[14:05] Wait, Satsuki didn’t know why Nui’s arms didn’t regenerate?
[14:05] tbh I like WW better than either OoT or TP and I can’t express a strong preference between Ocaraina and Twilight
01[14:05] So you have to use the scissors AS scissors to work
[14:05] Wait, what is… wow
[14:05] Which is why they were designed as scissors in the first place.
[14:06] Ooh, don’t go for the direct charge yet
01[14:06] Yes, not “how dare you mind control me into attacking my friends,” “how dare you make me wear that outfit”
[14:06] Well, same difference, on this show
[14:06] Aaaand Ragyo can fly now.
[14:06] Never attack during exposition, sheesh
01[14:07] Ragyo has achieved true detachment I see.
[14:07] Underboob, of course
[14:07] Yeah, go for the Life Fiber, it’s the source of her power anyway
[14:08] Ahh, that’s Mako’s gamer fuel
[14:08] Whoa
[14:08] Spawn egg attack
[14:08] The leviathan harpooned them.
[14:08] How did the thing get so close without them noticing?
[14:09] Wait, where have I seen that superweapon attack before? Opening a cone…
[14:09] Ad.
[14:09] Ah, the Bifrost
01[14:09] From?
[14:09] Thor
01[14:09] Oh!
01[14:09] Sorry, had my head stuck on anime.
[14:09] And I’m back.
[14:10] What the…
[14:10] Hey, use the bandages as armor!
01[14:10] *sigh* Mako’s family continue to think they’re funny.
[14:10] Like a mini-mecha
[14:10] “The Ryuko in my mind?”
[14:11] So, that was SUPPOSED to be kinda creepy, right?
[14:11] Yes, yes it was.
[14:11] Awwwwww, the Elite Four to the rescue
[14:11] Whoa, his collar has a mind of its own now
[14:11] “Persona unleashed.”
[14:12] Not a bad combined attack
[14:12] Satsuki really worked on her Social Links.
[14:12] “No need for such a flashy entrance?” How else are they supposed to beat the minibosses? Sheesh
[14:12] Ah, echoing Kyubey now?
[14:13] So, how much damage did it do?
[14:13] Whoa
[14:13] I think bisection counts as an instant death attack.
01[14:13] Um, that’s probably not a good thing.
[14:14] And on that note, ad.
[14:14] I mean, she survived that Life Fiber desync, so we know she’s effectively indestructable, but still… that can’t be comfortable
[14:14] And I’m back.
[14:15] Yeesh
[14:15] “A sham?”
[14:15] Ooh, Ragyo just made the big mistake
[14:15] Whoa, she got better fast
[14:16] All expressed through one hand signal.
[14:16] Ah… I thought there would have to be some dramatic moment of support when they put her back together
[14:16] Ahahah… she called her out on monologuing
[14:16] Ooh, Ragyo’s losing her cool as well
[14:17] Of course, wasting time on monloguing plays to Stasuki’s advantage when she does it
[14:17] Everything is a weapon for her
01[14:17] Aren’t they supposed to be destroying the transmitter?
[14:17] Wait, what? His eyes were fine all along?
[14:17] The giant alien that’s about to eat them is a bit more pressing.
[14:17] He had them sewn shut, not removed
[14:17] Right, I forgot
[14:17] Ooh, it’s going to transform?
[14:18] Ah, “gourd,” I was trying to think of what it looked like
[14:18] Ahahh… it’s powered by a hamster wheel, of course
[14:19] (I’ve taken to gauging the likely success of attacks by how dramatic the speeches are right before they make them)
[14:19] Wait, where’s the butler while all this is going on?
[14:19] Whoa, Mako’s hyperactivity comes in handy for once
01[14:19] Ah, Mako having her… crap I’m blanking on his name. The little pig creature in Gurren Lagann.
01[14:19] She’s having that moment.
[14:19] Ryuko can’t do it alone. She needs the support of her friends to pull it off.
[14:20] Buuta
[14:20] Ooh, the Blade Ship attack
[14:20] No, but it can be weakened
[14:20] “Humanity does not live for clothing,” is a big dramatc speech in this show
[14:21] Whoa, where did the ship land?
[14:21] Slammed into honnouji of course
[14:21] Of course
[14:21] “Shinra,” is one of its names, because of course it is
[14:22] Ooh, And now, all the club leaders unite to take down Nui and Ragyo
[14:23] “Apprehend?” Oh please
01[14:23] But first, tea.
[14:23] AHAHAHAH
[14:23] Of course, a tea break
[14:23] Naturally.
[14:24] The whole final boss fight and epilogue are only going to take one episode. That’s… refreshing
[14:24] Eww
[14:24] D’awww
[14:24] Stay tuned. There’s more.
[14:24] Ooh, something after the credits?
[14:25] After these completely out-of-place closing credits
[14:25] I’m pretty sure the song has been remixed
01[14:25] Wait what
[14:25] Does it sound different to anyone else?
[14:25] WHOA
[14:25] Your credits have been hijacked by Nui.
[14:25] Fourth wall attack!
01[14:25] So Nui is Santa Claus?
[14:26] “This woman is dangerous,” as if Ryuko wasn’t already aware of that
[14:26] Ah, so SHE’S the final miniboss. I was wondering what her purpose was
01[14:27] Okay, the next episode preview is the best Evangelion reference yet.

Sailor Moon Crystal Liveblog: Episode 9

In case you missed my announcement, in a few weeks I’m going to start posting weekly video responses on Wednesdays instead of text liveblogs. None of the liveblogs are going away, they’re just all going to be on Saturday instead of split between two days.

Curious about the videos? Subscribers to my Patreon can see them right away–the first is going up today!

[14:45] Ah yes, when we last left off, he was making himself useful for once
[14:45] Quick reminder: Tuxedo Mask was unable to follow very simple instructions
[14:46] “Stay here while the people with actual magic fight.”
[14:46] Evidently, this was some kind of flashback laser.
[14:47] Wait, did anyone involved with this production, or even the manga authors, think it would be a surprise that Usagi was Serenity?
[14:47] This is being shot and scored like a plot twist
[14:47] It kind of was twenty years ago.
01[14:48] Most current anime viewers weren’t born when the first series aired.
[14:48] I suppose
[14:48] When I was watching the 4kids dub I thought it was pretty obvious
[14:48] Ad.
[14:48] Even so, it was so obvious…
[14:48] likewise
[14:48] Alrighty then…
[14:48] Paused at the title card
[14:49] Oh hey, not an ad for Crunchyroll.
[14:49] What’s it advertising instead?
[14:49] Also, I should note that in the old cartoon, “is Sailor V the princess?” was resolved with her immediately saying “Naw, I’m just Sailor Venus”
01[14:49] Heheh, watching with adblock is funny, it just flickers instead of showing the ad.
01[14:49] Three flickers, hmm.
[14:49] So I was surprised when in this show, Sailor V actually straight up lied about it
[14:49] Ooh, I never counted the flickers
[14:49] A show on Fox. And now the cloud. And now a different show.
[14:50] Back.
[14:50] back
[14:50] Or does Sailor V actually think she’s the princess?
[14:50] The conversation with Artemis last episode clearly indicated that she knows what’s up
[14:50] And everyone’s showing complete disregard for gravity.
[14:50] Ah yeah, I forgot
[14:50] Oh great, THIS triggers a BSoD
[14:50] Or… not. Okay.
01[14:51] Sailor Moon is evolving!
[14:51] I really wish they hadn’t cut Tuxedo Mask’s “crying doesn’t solve anything” line from the first episode in a version of the show where crying solves things even more often than in the old show
[14:51] Or Digivolving
01[14:51] She became PRINCESS.
[14:52] Sailormon Digivolve to… Princessofthemon!
01[14:52] And then she reverses time, like you do.
[14:52] Nope. Just memories.
01[14:52] Okay, yeah, Sylocat’s gag is better.
[14:52] Now there’s a show I haven’t seen in way too long
01[14:52] Never watched it.
[14:52] You should at least see the third season, Digimon Tamers
01[14:53] FIRST PRINCE OF THE EARTH?
[14:53] It’s one of the best things ever, even the dubbed version was great
[14:53] That was a very good one, yes.
01[14:53] Just how far in the past are we?
[14:53] Oh yikes, Romeo and Juliet…
[14:53] “God’s law”? What, are nephilim a thing?
01[14:53] Or just angry mobs, I guess?
[14:53] Oh, and SHE was there
[14:54] Okay, we get it
01[14:54] Wait, no, she is a Pokemon, her tears have healing powers.
[14:55] Ah, good point, there
01[14:55] “It’s the legendary silver crystal! It was hiding in her face!”
[14:55] Now we just need to clone her…
[14:55] So yes, the power of girls crying is the power that will save the world
[14:55] Those two are awfully quick to celebrate the MacGuffin appearing in the hands of their enemy
[14:56] Good thing girls cry alot AMIRITE
[14:56] Whoa, Force Lightning
[14:56] Well, Usagi does, though that’s been underplayed in this version of the show.
[14:57] Oh, is this the part where he gets brainwashed and turns evil?
[14:57] Um, no. That’s not a crystal. That is a man.
[14:57] So he becomes EVEN MORE of a “Bad Boy™?”
01[14:57] Ah, of course, the old hostage-for-MacGuffin gambit.
01[14:57] With optional hostage brainwashing.
[14:57] Ad.
[14:57] ad
01[14:57] Eh, I’m guessing it won’t handle it as well as Fushigi Yuugi.
01[14:57] Which is not to say that Fushigi Yuugi handled it *well*, mind you.
01[14:58] Just better than I expect this to.
01[14:58] I’m not sure that it CAN be done well.
[14:58] I still haven’t seen Fushigi Yuugi
01[14:59] It’s rather like Cardcaptor Sakura, in that it is a quite good 26 episode series stretched to 50- or 70-something episodes .
[14:59] Ad over.
[14:59] Ouch
[14:59] Same.
01[14:59] Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden, the prequel manga, is a lot better though.
01[15:00] Mostly because of a WAY better teen-girl-from-our-world. Miaka kinda sucked.
[15:00] I notice they Katakana-ize “Princess”
[15:00] Instead of saying “-Hime”
[15:00] “Du you remember the violent deaths of everyone you ever knew and loved yet? How about now?”
[15:00] Huh, they didn’t mention that Venus was the lead bodyguard in the old show
[15:01] Jupiter is punching a sword
[15:01] And winning.
01[15:01] I still choose to believe that this is metaphoric deformation at work, and they were horrifying blob monsters when they lived on the moon.
[15:01] Maybe he was “First Prince of the Earth,” in the same sense as “First Officer,” rather than “First Chronologically”
[15:01] Or “heir to the throne.”
01[15:01] Oh, that’s the sense I was assuming.
01[15:02] First Prince is the heir to the throne, just like First Prince Philionel de Seyruun.
[15:02] And it took m that long to figure it out
[15:02] Oh, now Usagi is hitting the Identity Crisis
[15:02] Now I want to see Tuxedo Kamen perform a Pacifist Crush…
01[15:02] Man, Phil would squeeze Tuxedo Fedora’s brains out through the top of his head.
01[15:03] This show would be SO MUCH BETTER if we just substituted Prince Phil for Mamoru.
[15:03] So, are they going to brainwash him, or was that another thing that only happened in the first anime?
[15:03] Every show would be better with Prince Phil.
01[15:04] Possibly not The West Wing.
[15:04] Possibly.
01[15:04] Although maybe West Wing Season 8, starring Idris Elba as Chief of Staff Stacker Bellicose.
01[15:04] (Look it up.)
[15:04] …How much of that was a dream?
[15:05] I thought you didn’t like Pacific Rim
[15:05] The death definitely was. I think the rest actually happened.
01[15:05] I don’t.
01[15:05] But Pacific Rim-West Wing mashup is awesome.
[15:05] True ’nuff
[15:05] Usagi’s harem isn’t happy without her
01[15:06] Clearly not.
[15:06] They’re coming off as almost unhealthily dependent
01[15:06] She’s taken her true blob-monster form!
01[15:06] Or just her hair, anyway.
[15:07] Can’t she just make out with them and forget about Tuxedo Fedora?
[15:07] Wait, this sounds like TENMON music
01[15:07] None of her previous makeouts with them have gotten her to forget him, alas.
[15:07] No, it’s too upbeat to be TENMON music
01[15:08] Oh my god, just kiss already.
[15:08] Lesbian orgy time
[15:08] “You don’t need to walk the same path as your past life, but we’re all here to help you do that.”
[15:08] I would like that for a variety of both wholesome and unwholesome reasons
01[15:09] “Let’s go to the Moon,” suggested the cat.
01[15:09] This is a a thing that happens.
[15:09] An essential component of the monomyth.
[15:09] Well, she is named “Luna”
01[15:10] “They were all my precious treasures.”
01[15:10] Poly princess confirmed.
[15:10] Minako doesn’t get a full face shot.
[15:10] Luna has a Serious Cat face
[15:10] ad, but credits after
[15:10] I still don’t know why the boy cat is called “Artemis”
01[15:10] Only Minako’s right eye is determined.
[15:11] Are there any male moon dieties to name him after?
[15:11] I’m reasonably certain that there aren’t
[15:11] Well, there’s Shalim
[15:11] But that’s a little obscure
[15:11] And I suppose Artemis can be a boy’s name, just look at Artemis Fowl
01[15:12] There’s quite a few in Native American mythology.
[15:12] (though even in those books, villains sometimes tease Artemis about having a girl’s name)
01[15:12] And, I mean, Tsukuyomi?
[15:13] Given his voice, if Artemis had a male name, he’d collapse into a singularity of masculinity.
01[15:13] What would that even be?
[15:13] Jonny Bravo, but a cat?
01[15:13] I’m imagining, like, a fist, with a beard, wearing a fedora.
01[15:14] Or a gun made out of whiskey. Only a cat.
[15:14] Evil the Cat, from Earthworm Jim?
01[15:14] Er, no.
[15:14] Probably not
01[15:14] The accent.
[15:14] Ooh, maybe Bob the Goldfish’s bodyguards
[15:14] A space from which no whiskey escapes.
01[15:15] Anyway, yeah, that episode was kinda meh?
01[15:16] But hopefully next episode is kicking ass and taking names ON THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
01[15:16] (Sorry. Had to.)
[15:16] Yeah… I mean, I know it’s one of the seminal classics of girl-power fiction, but still…
[15:16] And yes, apparently the mascots are finally making themselves useful
[15:16] The general consensus of the fandom is that compared to the original anime, this one SUCKS.
[15:16] I like that shot of the two cats in sci-fi bottles
01[15:16] I mean, the episode that introduced Sailor Jupitor was seriously great!
01[15:17] And compared to the little bit I’ve seen of the first series, this is at least actually having things happen?
[15:17] I’m really feeling like this take is suffering for want of room for anything but the core plot
[15:17] Eh, I like this one fine…
01[15:17] Like, there’s a story to it?
[15:17] Yeah, there should be a happy medium between the pacing of the first anime and the pacing of this one
[15:17] The first series had a lot of monster of the week episodes
01[15:18] I mean, when it comes down to it, this is a sentai show. Characterization is not going to be its strong suit. So focusing on the core plot and just trying to keep moving is probably a good move.
[15:18] Although after the Jaedite arc, the emphasis shifted to the victim of the week – the negaverse general would prey on some Admirable Person and the scouts would save their Noble Dream from his machinations
[15:19] Well, there was that one episode where the victim of the week was kind of a jerk
[15:19] I do remember liking the focus on the victim of the week rather than on the monster of the week
01[15:19] Yeah, that does sound like an interesting approach.
[15:20] I think it was one of the main inspirations for Buffy
[15:20] It was, and they kept it for every subsequent season
01[15:20] Though I think I still prefer just not having -of-the-week.
01[15:20] And yeah, Sailor Moon is DEFINITELY a huge inspiration for Buffy. Buffy is basically just a magical girl anime with less stock footage.
[15:20] The thing is, this episode was mostly exposition. So was the last episode. The PV suggests the next episode will also mostly be expository
01[15:21] Yeah, and that *is* a problem, the last really good episode was Sailor Jupiter.
[15:21] Eh, I’m fine with exposition and flashbacks, so long as the characters aren’t sitting around being whiny brats about it
[15:21] I’d be fine with the exposition and flashbacks if they weren’t three consecutive episodes
[15:22] I’d say the whining was justified this episode.
01[15:22] Not really?
[15:22] I mean, I’d rather have “girls crying saves the world” than “girls crying causes problems,” but still.
01[15:23] She has something to be upset about–having an entire life of traumatic memories shoved in her brain–but she seems more upset about Jackass McPedoNecroRapeophile being kidnapped.
[15:23] Even if you don’t like him, Mamoru is the dude Usagi has a crush on and he just got kidnapped by demonstrably merciless actors
[15:23] True enough… No Accounting For Taste, after all
[15:23] I think the memories were the five-ton lead weight that broke the camel’s back.
[15:23] It’s just that Mamoru’s at the forefront of her mind.
01[15:23] Well, and if these were people you’d have a point. But they’re characters, and writers are not historians.
[15:24] I didn’t mind the Identity Crisis sequence, I just wish she’d done less angsting over Prince Endoucheymion
[15:25] Endymion seems to have been a stand-up dude. In the Mythic Past he probably didn’t kiss her while she was asleep at all.
[15:26] Ah, so it’s the same problem that turned him into an Angsty Brooder that also turned him into a psychically-senses-when-she-secretly-wants-her-boundaries-violated Bad Boy
[15:27] (not that she’s vocalized any boundaries for him)
[15:27] Must be something in the water.
[15:27] Amnesia, the infallible fountain of angst
01[15:27] “Don’t kiss people who are currently incapable of consent” really isn’t a boundary you should have to vocalize.
[15:27] Oh, I know, believe me
01[15:28] Also, y’know, she’s in MIDDLE SCHOOL and he’s like 30.
[15:28] He’s in high school
[15:28] I think he’s in high school, it’s said
01[15:28] Close enough.
[15:28] He LOOKS 30, but then again Usagi looks 22
01[15:29] Well yeah, but that’s art style.
[15:29] I was attempting to make a funny
01[15:30] We have to assume she looks like a middle schooler to the others, just as we have to assume they all actually have dark hair and eyes because they’re Japanese.
01[15:30] Anyway, I’m gonna head out.
01[15:30] Any final comments?
[15:30] Where did the tradition of Aryan-looking anime characters come from?
01[15:30] They’re not Aryan-looking.
[15:31] Well, you know what I mean
01[15:31] Pale, broad face, and large eyes is a Japanese standard of beauty that long predates contact with the West.
[15:31] They are protrayed “blank” and white people interpret blank art as white
[15:31] Lots of mental stuff today. Memories recovered on both shows.
[15:31] In Japan, it is Japanese, and not white, which is the unmarked category
01[15:31] The rest is just giving them a wide variety of hair and eye colors to make them easier to tell apart, whcih IIRC correctly goes back to Tezuka and Mushi Pro.
[15:32] Ah… so it arose out of animation convenience
[15:32] I’m not sure why I didn’t automatically assume that
[15:32] See you all next week.
[15:33] Unmarked categories have powerful sway over the unconcious assumptions people make
[15:33] See you
01[15:33] Yep, laters!
01[15:33] And yeah, agreed on the unmarked signifiers.
[15:33] Well, if she’s blonde, blue-eyed, and has milky pink skin, I think even ever-oblivious white people can be forgiven for thinking she’s meant to look white
01[15:33] Dangerously powerful and subtle little buggers.
01[15:34] I really need to dig up that picture of Gwen Stefani surroudned by Japanese schoolgirls, where the “white” woman is the darkest-skinned person in the shot…
[15:35] I mean, I know white people take whiteness as the default blank slate, but it’s a little baffling to see that in other cultures too
[15:35] It is plausible that Japan tends to identify itself with Europe more than with Asia. Japan was able to make itself an imperial power and conquer Korea, and therefore their modern culture shares a lot of the consequences of having your state conquer and rule over foreigners in modern history
[15:35] On the other hand, they have very long cultural ties to China and Korea that predate the modern imperialist time
01[15:36] True, but on the other hand having milky-white skin is a very old standard of beauty in Japan.
[15:36] As started with Geishas
01[15:36] So again, I’m not persuaded that “pale skin = white” to a Japanese viewer.
[15:36] Probably for the same reasons as in Europe – their skin tans when they work outside, so not being tanned was evidence that you didn’t labor outdoors
[15:37] That’s why tanning became fashionable during the industrial revolution – suddenly it was evidence you had time to not be laboring in a factory all day
01[15:37] In fact, if you look at anime characters who ARE specifically American… they tend to be tan, blonde, blue-eyed, and loud.
[15:37] Well, except for the tan, that summarizes a whole lot of anime characters too… but I get that you mean “loud” in a more specific way
01[15:38] Yeah, it’s the same reason that in Europe, as long as calories were expensive, fat was beautiful. Soon as calories became cheap and nutrients expensive, thin became beautiful.
[15:38] They tend to be given a particular regional accent that connotes loudness
[15:38] In addition to being genuinely as loud as most anime characters are
01[15:38] I actually went to a great panel at AUSA about racial stereotypes in anime, it was fascinating.
[15:39] What are the Russian signifiers?
01[15:39] They covered that! I’m trying to remember…
[15:39] Whereas, in America, thin has always been beautiful because half our moral system revolves around self-denial (as opposed to actual selflessness or generosity)
[15:39] We
[15:40] We also have enjoyed agricultural plenty due to having a lot of stolen farmland on hand
[15:40] I remember how Azumanga Daioh portrayed English-speakers… that was epic
01[15:40] Fur/heavy clothing, I remember that. Temper that gets them into trouble.
01[15:41] The English are super-cultured and exotic, while Americans are loud, narcissistic, and plaster flags all over themselves.
[15:41] The latter comes far closer to actually applying
[15:41] tbh, the flag thing really happens sometimes
01[15:42] Chinese men are depicted as either sneaky and duplicitous, or foolish, with no in between, while Chinese women are basically the same as the Western “dragon lady.”
[15:42] The English thing makes sense, since the Japanese empire was modeled on the British Empire
01[15:42] And I mean, these are stereotypes, the panel went out of its way to point out exceptions as well.
[15:42] Which makes sense – the UK and Japan are both densely populated islands
[15:43] So when the Japanese government was deciding how to make their country great, the nation that had similar circumstances and the biggest empire running was an obvious model
[15:43] With some of these, it depends whether they’re actually set in Japan, or in a generic fantasy world whose various cultures just happen to closely resemble Earth cultures of various time periods
01[15:43] Oh, and Filipinos are depicted with *exactly* the same stereotypes as American media uses for Mexicans, and for much the same reason.
[15:43] …What anime have Filipinos in them?
[15:43] There’s also the half-French boyfriend material trope
[15:44] That one is surprisingly universal
01[15:44] Hence Pedro in Excel Saga, which American viewers watch and immediately go, “Ah, he’s the Mexican stereotype,” while Japanese viewers instantly recognize him as a Filipino stereotype (which he is explicitly stated to be in the manga IIRC).
[15:44] Isn’t that type a Parisian stereotype within France itself?
[15:44] Ah yes, Excel Saga… I should give that show a second chance

[14:00] What an image to start on
[14:01] Commentary™
[14:01] WHOA
01[14:02] Shit, Netflix is refusing to work for me.
[14:02] So, it’s gone from subtext to text
[14:02] Ah… should we push it back a bit?
01[14:02] Yeah, sorry, can we put a pin in it and restart at 2:05?
[14:02] Fine by me. Hulu froze up too.
[14:03] Okay… paused at 2:21, exactly at the title card
[14:03] (or we could start over)
[14:03] I am also paused at title card
[14:03] As am I. Got it working.
[14:04] Okay then…
[14:04] Froborr, is it working now?
[14:05] Click again…
[14:07] Ad.
[14:07] Is the ad right after the opening credits?
01[14:07] Sorry folks, still not working.
[14:07] Dang…
01[14:07] I’m going to switch to Crunchyroll, if y’all can just hang out at the ad after the opening credits?
[14:07] Try it on Crunchyroll instead?
[14:07] It is.
01[14:07] Sorry.
[14:08] Can do, Froborr.
[14:08] Alright… at least we know where to pause
[14:08] We resume at twelve past?
[14:08] (or eleven)
01[14:09] I’m thinking we resume when I hit the end of the ad after the opening credits…
01[14:09] Okay, cold open is now playing!
01[14:09] Ew.
[14:09] Like I said…
[14:09] Yeah.
01[14:09] Hmm, interesting that Nui can’t use Kamuis.
[14:10] Or Goku uniforms, or any other life-fiber clothing
[14:10] Ragyo needs to get taken down, stat
[14:10] And, as I said, WHOA
01[14:10] See, now Ryuko/Nui makeouts are acceptable.
[14:11] (hang on, gonna reset my connection)
01[14:11] Weird, but at least not frickin’ incest.
01[14:11] …wait, no, shit, they are incest, aren’t they?
[14:11] Well, not by a strict definition.
01[14:11] They’re half-sisters, fuck.
01[14:11] I mean no, don’t fuck, because it’s gross.
[14:11] Depends on whether Ragyo used her DNA or if Nui’s just pure alien fabric.
01[14:11] True.
03[14:11] * Sylocat (b83c1db1@gateway/web/freenode/ip.184.60.29.177) has joined ##rabbitcube
01[14:12] Except it seems pretty clear Ragyo raised Nui as her daughter regardless, so her DNA is kind of secondary.
[14:12] So there’s that.
[14:13] Indeed, a study into the question showed that sexual revulsion develops between adopted siblings, and is absent from siblings raised apart
01[14:13] Credits over, on to the ad.
[14:13] I forget the name attached to it
[14:13] On average, at least
01[14:13] I mean, that makes sense, because it’s not like we can sense other people’s DNA, but we DO know who we grow up with.
01[14:13] And however the incest revulsion works, it kind of has to be based on what we can sense, right?
01[14:14] Holy fuck I am getting the exact same ad THREE TIMES IN A ROW.
[14:14] Crunchyroll.
01[14:14] And it’s for fucking Crunchyroll itself.
01[14:14] Weaksauce.
01[14:14] Back!
[14:15] I do like pulling the pin with a sword.
[14:15] Satsuki steals her transformation sequence, but adds tentacles
[14:15] Ah, Mako relays the message for them to stay out of it
[14:17] Ah, I always wondered why dueling energy beams didn’t push one combatant into a wall
01[14:17] They’re building some kind of giant monster body for Ragyo aren’t they.
[14:18] Ragyo wearing a giant monster body? How would they tell?
[14:18] (sorry)
[14:18] I’m counting eight different screen-in-screens there.
[14:18] At least.
01[14:18] I think they may have hit 12.
[14:18] So, when Ryuko gets Senketsu back, what’s Satsuki going to fight in?
[14:19] Satsuki’s fighting like a Pokemon trainer.
[14:20] We’ve already seen Dark Ryuko, so what do you call this?
[14:21] Oh!
01[14:21] Hey, they are joining in!
[14:21] So the Elite Four do get involved after all!
[14:21] WHOA
01[14:21] The Elite Four coming to the rescue of the Pokemon trainer?
[14:21] Collar McDatapants is going all out for this fight
[14:21] Heh. I didn’t even mean to set that one up.
[14:22] D’aww, the power of friendship
01[14:22] Oh hey, I forgot about the clothing removal gun.
01[14:22] Also: yes, Satsuki actually uses tactics instead of insisting on going alone!
[14:22] Hahah…
[14:22] Oh, of course, Mako had to have the plan written on her hands
01[14:22] And that’s why she’s the shonen villain instead of the shonen hero.
01[14:22] (Satsuki, not Mako.(
[14:23] Of course, Nui butts in as well
01[14:23] Ad.
01[14:23] The SAME ad.
[14:23] Also ad.
[14:24] Let me guess, it’s gonna play three times?
01[14:24] Who knows?
01[14:24] Playing a second time.
[14:24] Eeyup
01[14:24] Seriously if they show this ad again, that’s it, I’m turning on adblock for Crunchyroll.
01[14:24] Yep, third time.
[14:24] A wise decision indeed
01[14:24] I’m turning on adblock for when we do Sailor Moon.
[14:25] My ad’s done.
01[14:25] I’ll turn it back off and give them a second chance next weekend.
[14:25] I mean, it’s not like Crunchy can pay itself for their own ads
01[14:25] Back
[14:25] Oh, don’t tell me Mako will be the stalemate breaker
01[14:25] Of course. Power of Friendship and such shit.
[14:25] What’s with the low-tech displays?
[14:26] Those have been there the whole series.
[14:26] And why do all their stockholders look identical?
[14:26] First time we say them was the 60% goku uniform experiment
[14:26] Or is that a clever commentary on business culture?
01[14:26] The stockholders have always all looked identical.
01[14:26] And yes.
[14:26] It’s a stylistic choice. The good guys tend to be individually distinct. The bad guys tend to be interchangeable.
[14:27] It’s the Clothing Instrumentality Project
01[14:27] Oh look, Deus.
[14:27] Lavos can fly now.
01[14:27] And/or Giant Space Buttplug.
[14:28] Yep, Mako is going to… what is she doing?
[14:28] “And you can’t get dressed up for a date?”
[14:28] Being Mako.
[14:28] I got about 25% of the references in this sequence
[14:28] Ad.
[14:29] Back.
01[14:29] So yeah, now Mako’s wearing Senketsu, this’ll end well.
[14:29] MAKO is going to wear Senketsu?
[14:30] Oh, Nui, you shouldn’t have said that
01[14:30] “Fool, no human can defeat me.”
[14:30] (or wait, you should have, since I want to see you get obliterated)
01[14:30] “I AM NO HUMAN.”
[14:30] Whoa
[14:30] Satsuki can even do psychological warfare
[14:31] Oh jeez
[14:31] Well, Ryuko has a point there…
[14:31] Wait, what?
[14:32] Even Mako disapproves of this plan.
[14:32] Ouch
[14:32] That’s gonna be painful
[14:32] Oh hey, callback to the first episode.
01[14:32] Oh for fuck’s sake, not ANOTHER rape-y reference with Senketsu.
[14:32] HUH?
[14:32] Ad.
[14:32] Wait, did Mako just get sucked inside too?
[14:32] Yup.
[14:33] Nightmare Fuel if there ever was any
[14:33] I’m back.
[14:33] Uh… huh?
01[14:34] I don’t think Mako was expecting her to CALL that bluff.
[14:34] Wait, how much of this is actually happening?
01[14:34] Physically? None I think.
[14:34] Hard to say.
[14:34] My god, this whole final arc really is an Evangelion reference
[14:35] Hey, it’s the stuff from that time Ryuko went berzerk
[14:35] Well, TRIGGER’s made up of people who used to work at Gainax, so…
[14:35] WHOA
[14:35] I mean, Nui won’t go down that easy, but still, that’s awesome
[14:35] Eww
[14:35] This is all kinds of disturbing
01[14:36] Well, that is a thing that happened.
01[14:36] Any after-credits stuff this episode?
[14:36] I don’t think that credit sequence will ever be appropriate.
[14:36] Oh, of course, THAT would be the cliffhanger
[14:36] I think it’s just the episode preview again
[14:37] My brain is attempting to process what just happened
[14:37] Jumping forward to check
[14:37] Yeah, it’s pv only
[14:37] (or “unravel,” as would probably be a more appropriate term)
[14:37] A journey into Ryuko’s heart. Literally.

Sailor Moon Crystal Liveblog: Episode 8

01[15:00] Oh right, Sailor Bwee.
[15:01] Mercury has uwee
01[15:01] BWA
[15:01] What.
01[15:01] That voice coming out of a little cat is HILARIOUS
[15:01] Agreed.
[15:01] Yeah
01[15:02] I know they won’t, but it’d be pretty cool if it turned out our main character *wasn’t* the destined princess, but was instead just one of her elite guard.
01[15:04] Moon’s tiara is all “No way, I can TOTALLY out-crescent her!”
[15:04] Sailor Moon’s tiara evolved again. Must be a Bug-type.
01[15:05] And once again Usagi is all, “So hot, must add her to my harem.”
[15:05] And V’s been spying on them through the arcade machine. That’s not creepy.
[15:05] “Oh, I wasn’t hallucinating”
[15:06] “I really was being lectured by my hero through a video game at my favorite arcade”
[15:06] “that is a relief”
01[15:06] It’s a good thing that Usagi wasn’t playing that Starfighter game next to Sailor V, she would’ve gotten recruited into COMPLETELY the wrong adventure.
[15:07] Lol
[15:07] Ad.
01[15:07] Ad.
[15:07] ad
01[15:07] lol
[15:07] It’s as if we are all using the same website
[15:07] 10 seconds remain
[15:07] For this ad.
01[15:07] I just started a second 30 second ad.
[15:07] Repeat of same ad
[15:07] Mine is also 30s
[15:07] It’s as if we are all using the same website.
01[15:08] back
[15:08] Likewise.
01[15:08] Arr?
[15:08] yes
[15:08] same as you all
[15:08] I didn’t pause when it ended, did you all hold up?
01[15:09] Yes.
[15:09] whoops
01[15:09] Ah, this is the Explain the Plot Episode.
[15:09] I’m now paused at 7:59
[15:09] With Sailor Exposition
01[15:09] I’m at 7:49.
[15:09] 8:02
01[15:09] Hitting 7:59… now.
01[15:10] So, if she destroyed the moon kingdom and killed evryone… who sealed her?
[15:10] Some of them died after sealing her.
01[15:10] Fair enough.
[15:11] I like to think she’s named Metallia because of the vicious metallic dust that covers the moon now
[15:11] “Regolith” doesn’t have quite the same ring for eldritch abominations, does it?
01[15:11] Wait, why is “Artemis” a male cat?
[15:11] Actually it totally does
[15:12] Artemis & Luna
[15:12] @Froborr: The fandom has made that joke many times.
01[15:12] Endymion, eh?
01[15:13] The mythical shepherd and astronomer that was the mortal lover of the moon goddess Selene. Slightly more obscure than I gave this show credit for.
[15:13] I can’t help but note that no one’s called her “Minako” yet. It’s always “Princess” or “V-chan.” That’s kind of sad.
01[15:14] She’s kind of encouraged that, though? She’s defintiely playing the sempai role to the hilt.
[15:14] True.
01[15:14] Not to mention, the way she’s worried about them regaining their memories suggests she KNOWS she isn’t the princess.
[15:14] It’s notable to me that you connect the sempai role to the princess role
01[15:15] Well, they’re both social superiors, one by birth and one by experience.
[15:15] Ad.
01[15:15] Ad/
01[15:15] Also: “we”
[15:15] Ad
01[15:16] Are ALL cats part of a vast ancient lunar conspiracy?
[15:16] I wouldn’t be surprised.
[15:16] Two rounds of the 30s ad here
01[15:16] How Lovecraftian of them.
[15:16] same as you guys, right? So there’s no need for anyone to pause at the end, right?
[15:16] Back.
[15:16] I guess not
[15:16] what
[15:16] a THIRD run
01[15:16] And I had a 10 second ad followed by 30 and now another 30.
[15:17] I got 3×30 that is merciless
01[15:17] back
[15:17] done
[15:17] Lovecraft vs. Lovecraft. Metallia vs. cats. Who will win?
01[15:17] Cats.
[15:18] Obviously. They have much better PR.
01[15:18] Also thus far Metallia doesn’t appear particularly Lovecraftian, tbh.
01[15:18] She’s not particularly eldritch.
[15:18] Point. More generic “shadow demon”
01[15:19] Um, yes, DUH it’s a trap!
[15:19] Wow. So much for that secret identity.
01[15:20] Wow, so, why didn’t they just have Kunzite show up from the start and kill everyone?
01[15:20] He seems kind of OP relative to the other generals.
[15:20] Killing the humans means they can’t be exploited for energy
01[15:20] True.
[15:21] You don’t kill sheep to shear them.
[15:21] This move looks like it works like Power Word: Kill in that it’s wholly ineffective against strong targets
[15:21] Huh. No power-up incantation for Venus.
01[15:21] And the same song as Mercury and Moon–no unique transformation music like Mars and Jupiter.
[15:22] Jupiter can fly, apparently.
01[15:22] BTW Jupiter can fly.
[15:23] BY THE WAY: TEAMWORK
01[15:23] “precious friends,” is that what the kids are calling it these days.
[15:24] This is why you don’t try to heal shields, Usagi.
[15:24] Ad.
01[15:24] Ad.
[15:24] ad
[15:24] It worked great against the other guy – was that zoicite?
[15:24] The one who had to get rescued by Beryl
[15:24] True. And yes.
[15:25] Back.
01[15:25] Still mid-ad.
[15:25] Artemis’ Serious Cat voice is a pretty good surprise
01[15:25] THIRD ad.
[15:25] done
01[15:26] back
[15:26] I just noticed the bunny ears on Usagi’s new tiara. They’re kind of hilarious.
01[15:26] Tuxedo Mask’s all, “Kissing a conscious girl? I don’t know how to handle that!”
[15:27] I liked the “Thanks for the save, now get out here while the adults fight.”
01[15:27] Yeah, it was pretty great.
01[15:27] Sadly, I am virtually certain he survived.
[15:27] And masculinity anxiety claims another life
[15:28] Alas, that would have read much better if I had been just slightly faster
[15:28] Seems like gravity can now be ignored when the plot demands it now.
01[15:28] Indeed.
[15:28] Anime jumping
[15:28] I’m going to say Jupiter is using some kind of maglev with the Earth’s field.
01[15:29] Plus everyone except Tuxedo Bats is a superhero, and he’s Batman.
[15:29] But can he breathe in space?
01[15:29] Only one way to find out!
01[15:29] Actually, given that they had a civilization ON THE MOON, presumably none of them need air.
[15:30] One assumes the moon used to be a lot more pleasant an environment
[15:30] “Oxygen? You mean you’re still using that? How quaint.”
01[15:30] It’d be pretty cool if we eventually found out that the dream-memory-things are actually being translated into human terms by the process of reincarnation, and in their past lives on the moon they were all hideous blob monsters.
[15:31] And Endymion still fell in love with one.
01[15:31] Wait, Endymion was from Earth?
01[15:31] I mean, in the myth, obviously, but in the show as well?
[15:31] FoME just slipped up
01[15:32] Grr.
[15:32] Yeah. I keep forgetting that the twenty-year old spoilers are still spoilers for you.
[15:32] My bad.
[15:32] You mentioned that Endymion was more obscure than you expected to see. It turns out Naoko Takeuchi is way into old Greek & Roman stuff
01[15:32] Huh, interesting.

Sailor Moon Crystal Liveblog Chat Thingy: Episode 7

Sorry this is up so late. Plans were disrupted by the need to go to the ER. I’m fine, but probably going to need surgery in the not too distant future, so I’m opening up calls for the week or so of guest posts I’m likely to need.

Also, I finally updated the Kill la Kill chat post from Saturday with the log.

01[14:55] Hullo.
[14:55] Hi.
01[14:55] So it looks like I’ve got one ad after the opening credits, one before the ending credits, and only one actually during the show, which is good.
01[14:55] On the other hand, given the way crunchyroll usually works for me, those’ll each be three consecutive ads.
[14:56] Okay, pre-loading…
[14:56] Great, two episodes in a row named after the guy
[14:56] I’ve got the same setup.
[14:56] Ah well… the last one got better at the end.
01[14:56] Yeah, I’m not enthused by this episode title.
01[14:57] That’s true.
[14:58] (I linked you all to Nostalgia Chick’s “hottest animated guys” list, right?)
[14:58] Yup.
01[14:58] Yep.
[14:58] Yeah
[14:58] She doesn’t have a lot to say about this guy because she didn’t really watch the show
[14:58] I know, but several of the other picks say a lot
[14:58] Okay, 1 minute
[14:59] (and he’s still less obnoxious than in the first anime)
[14:59] (not that that’s a high bar to clear)
[14:59] Click
[15:00] Is that Speedy Gonzales in Toei’s logo?
[15:00] Oh, we pick up right where we left off
01[15:00] No, it’s Puss in Boots.
[15:00] It’s not a transformation. There’s an actual tuxedo. That’s kind of hilarious.
[15:00] Hahaha
01[15:01] That WOULD explain why he’s a non-teleporting loser.
[15:01] “How could I not have noticed?”
[15:01] There was a transform in the old anime and tbh I think this fits him better
[15:01] It’s a very good question!
[15:01] Even SHE thinks she should have figured it out
01[15:02] Though to be fair, she’s met his secret identity, what, twice?
[15:02] The obvious explanation is that she had a negative first impression of his civilian identity and a positive impressioin of his costumed identity and motivated reasoning
[15:02] Good points all
[15:02] Indeed. Also, ad.
01[15:02] Also he may be doing a posture thing like Christopher Reeves as Superman.
01[15:03] Ad here, too.
[15:03] Of course, he slouches like Supes
[15:03] I’m back.
01[15:03] Still an ad here.
01[15:03] Back.
[15:03] Also, it’s notable that apparently flimsy masks do spoil immediate recognition. People are often not recognized when they start or stop wearing  glasses.
[15:03] Phew
[15:04] Right… it’s a “Nuking the Fridge” moment, where something that is actually plausible strikes the viewers as wrong
[15:04] Tuxedo Mask and the Crystal Skull? There’s a mental image.
[15:04] (did I miss the “ad over?”)
[15:05] Yes.
01[15:05] Yeah, you did.
[15:05] It’s more of an issue for long-running stories where there’s an opportunity for close examination
01[15:05] Hmm, no superpowers, dead parents, obsession, entitled asshole… so Batman, basically.
[15:05] Except not rich
[15:05] So he’s got that going for him
01[15:05] True.
01[15:06] On the other hand he’s quite a bit more rape-y than Batman, so.
[15:06] “I’m looking for the MacGuffin because it will resotre my lost memories.” “My cat told me to.” Oh, Usagi.
[15:06] Ah, so THAT’s why the episode is named after him
[15:06] Well, depends on the Batman writer
01[15:06] True, ASBAR Bats is basically a child-molesting kidnapper.
01[15:07] Usako?
01[15:08] Wait, does Sailor V outrank Luna?
[15:08] “Rather inexperienced”? She was the first one! Other than V.
[15:09] Until last episode, Kyubey outranked Luna AFAIWC
[15:09] ko at the end of a word generally indicates child, so “Usako” is a rabbit child. Diminutive nicknames are coded romantic, both here and in Japan.
01[15:09] Oh, I like how Metalia has a forehead star, like a dark mirror of a Sailor Scout.
[15:09] Wait, I’d forgotten that Luna was actually in contact with Sailor V
[15:09] I don’t remember seeing that before this episode either
01[15:09] Wait, the Dark Kingdom is on Earth?
[15:10] Actual regret from Beryl?
01[15:10] I just assumed they were on some other planet or alternate dimension or something!
[15:10] Yeah, near “D-point” same as in the old anime
01[15:10] Beryl’s human!?
[15:10] I assume “Legendary Silver Crystal” sounds more badass in Japanese
[15:11] Beryl was human once. Now? It’s up for debate.
01[15:11] The evil rental store is called “Dark.”
01[15:11] They’re not even trying anymore.
01[15:12] Okay, he knows who she is and is just trolling, right?
[15:12] Oh dear god what.
[15:12] At no point have Sailor Moon villains been known for suble deception
[15:12] Ooh, I have a video rental place here like that
[15:13] Hahah
01[15:14] Blaaarrrrghh
01[15:14] Ad.
01[15:14] Also, ewwww he is SMELLING her HANDKERCHIEF.
01[15:15] Gross.
[15:15] Likewise.
[15:15] I hope that’s not supposed to be symbolic
[15:15] Ironically, Crystal plays up the “miracle romance” angle far more than the version where that was in the theme song.
[15:15] I think he’s kissing it, which is framed to mirror Usagi kissing his watch
01[15:15] Possible, Arrlaari.
01[15:15] Back.
[15:15] As am I.
01[15:16] Significantly less gross if true.
[15:16] And now I’m only 15 seconds behind rather than 2 minutes
[15:16] I’m surprised they haven’t figured out that something’s wrong with their classmates
[15:17] They rent out DVDs in CD cases?
01[15:17] Lots of video stores used to use their own boxes.
[15:17] And the arcade machine has a DVD slot now.
01[15:17] Makes it harder to steal and resell the product.
[15:17] Sailor V can talk through the game! Just like Dr. Zola in Captain America: TWS!
[15:18] “Why did I tell her all that?” Because she’s the main character, moron
[15:18] This episode has taken a left turn into scarytown
01[15:20] Man, that multi-target status-cure spell of hers is potent stuff.
[15:20] And then Sailor Moon was a legendary Pokémon.
[15:20] Wait, it’s that easy to do a mass remedy now?
[15:20] Moon Healing Escalation is primarily an exorcism move
[15:21] In the old anime it was introduced to defeat humans who had been transformed into Youma without vaporizing them
[15:21] Wow. This is certainly a deviation from previous versions of Zoicite.
01[15:21] It’d be awesome if Sailor V showed up now instead of Tuxedo Mask.
01[15:21] …Nope. Darn.
[15:21] No such luck
01[15:21] I guess Zoisite is weak to Fighting type moves?
[15:22] Makes sense, I suppose
[15:22] He is a Dark-type, after all.
[15:22] From the comments: “It’s nice to see Tuxedo Mask throwing punches instead of roses” and yet the old anime Tux had seen a lot more action by this point in the plot than this Tux
[15:22] Ahahah
[15:22] That has something to do with how many more episodes the old show had, admittedly
[15:23] Wow, he almost becomes less of a douche
[15:23] Secret identies? What are those?
[15:23] Where are the other… ah, there they are
01[15:23] Oh shit, guess I called it again!
[15:23] Wait, that was LUNA?!
[15:23] Oh, no, it was Sailor V
01[15:23] Man, I’m on a roll today.
[15:24] Yes, yes you are
[15:24] So, Sailor V appeared to assist the other senshi in the middle of Episode 33 of the old anime
[15:24] She pronounces it “Sailor Vwee?”
[15:24] “V” is a weird sound in Japanese.
[15:25] I assumed it was just the Katakana “Bii”
[15:25] They have real difficulty with sounds that don’t appear in their own language
01[15:25] Doesn’t actually exist, for starters.
[15:26] I do like how when Tux goes for a second punch, Zoicite is just like “nope”
01[15:26] Yep. Basically Tuxedo Mask’s only power is that he’s too much of a loser to be worth noticing, so he gets a surprise round.
[15:27] Rogues are never as good on the second round.
01[15:27] Eh, they’re fine as long as they can get flanking.
01[15:28] Anwyay, any final thoughts?
[15:28] They are really burning through the main plot of this show and a lot of the secondary characters are suffering for it
[15:28] They’re trying to cram several dozen episodes of romantic development into less than ten, and it shows.
[15:29] By this time in the old anime, Naru had got a major subplot and Umino got a couple of focus episodes
[15:29] How much of that was in the manga?
[15:29] I don’t know the manga well enough to say
[15:29] Nor I.
[15:30] Although I recall reading that Naru’s subplot wasn’t in the manga
01[15:30] I’m sure we’ll find out in the comments.
[15:31] The enormous stabby crystal was familiar, though.

[14:00] Ah yes… when we last left off, FUCK YEAH SATSUKI[14:00] I mean, it’s still way too early for that attack to work (unless Nui is the final boss after all, which I doubt), but still… You go girl!
[14:00] Ooh, truncated opening?
[14:00] And a reversal of her opening Orwellianism.
[14:00] Ad.
03[14:01] * ChanServ sets mode: +o Sylocat
[14:02] Almost done… 🙁
[14:02] Ready.
[14:03] Ooh, that acupuncture technique works
[14:03] Huh… I was expecting Mataro to have to save everyone
[14:03] Wait, do they already know that being impaled won’t stop Ragyo? Now that’s genre savvy
[14:04] Well, HE’S genre blind, anyway
[14:04] Naturally.
[14:04] Worst. Covert communications. Ever.
[14:05] Wait, where did those screens come from?
[14:05] Science!
[14:05] I think they’re part of the stadium design.
[14:05] Gee, I wonder why Satsuki wouldn’t have qualms about stabbing you in the back, Ragyo…
01[14:05] Think I’m a little too far ahead.
[14:05] Dang, Satsuki was prepared
[14:06] (nah, I just took too long to type that)
[14:06] Huh?
[14:06] WHOA! Even he took her by surprise!
[14:07] Of course, Collar McDatapants has to spoil the poetic dialogue
[14:07] “Um, Actually”
[14:07] Eeyup
[14:07] I thought the same thing.
[14:07] GO NONON
01[14:07] Yeah, Nonon!
[14:07] They almost had her on the ropes for a bit
[14:08] Ad.
[14:08] Just to clarify, where is everyone? I’m paused at 6:19
[14:08] Done.
[14:08] Aww, he really cares about Mako
01[14:08] Just behind that by a couple seconds.
[14:09] Right about there.
[14:09] Of course, THAT works
[14:09] “When did you turn against me?” Gee, I wonder when
[14:11] Ragyo Kiryuin: Also a mad scientist.
[14:11] For a moment, I almost thought Ragyo cared about her newborn kid
[14:11] “Monologuing,” she calls it
[14:12] Backstory doesn’t tell itself, director
[14:12] Dang, Satsuki really is genre savvy
[14:12] If Metroid taught us anything, it’s that the parasitic aliens are weak to cold.
[14:12] She knew she’d have to overprepare
[14:12] WHOA
[14:13] But of course, Ragyo is even more powerful
01[14:14] Yes, bringing an army of mooks against the mind control parasites *does* tend to backfire.
01[14:14] She’s not *that* genre savvy.
[14:14] Of course, Ragyo is also dumb enough to think that said army of mooks will be enough to take on the characters who have already got said mooks working for them
[14:14] The thread spools Ragyo uses here were on her desk in the scene where Rei is reporting that their clothes were being stolen
[14:14] Really? I missed that
[14:15] It was a few episodes back
[14:15] So, when is Senketsu gonna interfere?
[14:15] Okay, that’s just cheating
[14:16] Ad.
[14:16] Nui’s powers have no rules
[14:16] She’s been called “Evil Pinkie” for reasons other than her color scheme.
[14:16] Of course
[14:16] She even went to the mirror pool
[14:17] I’m back.
01[14:17] I am doubtful this fight scene can last another 8 episodes, so I wonder how they separate everyone.
[14:17] Ooh, Ragyo, don’t say “She’ll never be able to…”
01[14:18] Oh.
01[14:18] Of course.
[14:18] (what am I saying? Go ahead and say that, Ragyo, since it’ll lead to your destruction)
01[14:18] Her one red hair is a life fiber.
01[14:18] She’s that baby they discarded.
[14:18] Yes, she just reached in through her own skull.
[14:18] Uh oh
[14:19] Outright mind control won’t work, but pushing her buttons will
01[14:20] Yeah, shonen heroes are never hard to manipulate.
[14:20] On the other hand, her theme song is playing.
[14:21] “Never given a name.” Come on
[14:21] Ooh, cutting off the head works? She’s a Highlander?
[14:21] Uh oh… her blood raining down, will that turn into Life Fibers?
[14:21] And in the end, Satsuki and Ryuko have the same motivation: avenging a father.
[14:22] Oh, it’s the Life Fiber itself that goes berserk now
01[14:22] Ah, of course.
[14:22] Or not
[14:22] Come on, Ryuko… KO Nui and cut that last thread…
[14:23] Eww
[14:23] Oh come on
01[14:24] Ew.
[14:24] Ryuko was supposed to interfere
[14:24] It’s not hard to guess what “ew” is for.
[14:24] Is this another Evangelion reference?
[14:25] I don’t believe so.
[14:26] Well duh
[14:26] I’m surprised everyone hadn’t figured that out by now
01[14:26] I had.
[14:26] Wait, where are the Elite Four while all this is going on? I didn’t see Nui’s copies take them out
[14:26] Pictured: Froborr http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20061211092134/wikiality/images/d/d2/ICalledIt.jpg
[14:26] They were being distracted by Ragyo’s secretary.
[14:26] Are they going to interfere and save them next episode (don’t answer that)?

[14:27] (I tried to find an animated gif but not enough time)
01[14:27] lol
[14:27] Since episode 3!
[14:27] Incidentally, one of the ways to translate “Ryuko Matoi”? Abandoned child. Remember how terrible her father was at naming things?
01[14:27] Okay, that’s pretty funny.
01[14:28] Anyway, final thoughts?
[14:28] So yeah, I’m feeling desirous of seeing Ragyo get killed in many different horrible ways
[14:28] Basically I’ve been planning to link a Colbert “called it” image here since episode 3
[14:28] I’m quite glad I was at least able to do that while travelling
01[14:29] And I appreciate it!
[14:29] I haven’t seen Eva, but it’s my impression that Gendo was a contender for worst anime parent ever
[14:30] I’m reasonably certain that he can’t compete with Ragyo, though
01[14:30] Yeah, Gendo was emotionally distant and neglectful.
01[14:30] Ragyo is sexually abusive of one child and abandoned the other.
[14:30] Well, she performed a life threatening experiment on the other and was convinced she had died
[14:31] On a lighter note, props to Soroi for running while carrying about a dozen people at the age of sixty-something.
